Why Signal Words Are the #1 Verbal Skill

Every GRE Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence question is built around a hidden logical relationship between the blank and the rest of the sentence. The fastest way to find that relationship is to locate the signal word — and the most common signal is whether the sentence contrasts (turns against itself) or continues (keeps agreeing with itself).

The core method: before reading the answer choices, cover the blank and ask: "does the rest of the sentence agree with itself, or turn against itself?" This alone predicts roughly whether you need a word that matches or opposes the sentence's other key idea.

The Signal Word Table

Memorize these two lists — they appear in some form in nearly every Verbal question.

Watch "while": it can mean "at the same time as" (neutral/time) or "whereas" (contrast) — check whether the two halves of the sentence actually disagree before treating it as a contrast signal.

"while" খেয়াল রাখুন: এটি সময়সূচক বা বৈপরীত্যসূচক দুটোই হতে পারে — বাক্যের দুই অংশ সত্যিই দ্বিমত কিনা যাচাই করুন।

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Contrast

"Although the committee's report was thorough, its recommendations were largely ______, offering little practical guidance for policymakers."

READ THE SIGNAL"Although" flags a contrast between "thorough" and whatever the blank says. "Offering little practical guidance" confirms the blank should mean something like vague or impractical — the opposite of a useful, thorough report.
TRAPA test-taker who ignores "although" might pick a word like "rigorous" or "detailed" because the report itself was "thorough" — but the blank describes the recommendations, which the sentence tells us contrast with the report's thoroughness.
Example 2 — Continuation

"The lecture was not only informative but also ______, keeping the audience engaged from start to finish."

READ THE SIGNAL"Not only... but also" is a continuation structure — both halves must describe positive qualities in the same direction. "Keeping the audience engaged" confirms the blank should mean something like engaging or captivating.
TRAPPicking a neutral or negative word (e.g., "lengthy," "technical") ignores that "not only... but also" requires the second quality to reinforce, not complicate, the first.

Common Mistakes

  • Missing a contrast signal buried mid-sentence: signals like "yet" or "still" often appear after a comma, not at the sentence's start — read the whole sentence before predicting.
  • Treating semicolons as neutral: a semicolon often connects two closely related, same-direction ideas — functioning like a continuation signal even with no explicit word.
  • Overriding the signal with outside knowledge: the correct answer is determined by the sentence's internal logic, not by what you personally believe is true about the topic.
  • Missing double contrast: two contrast signals in one sentence ("although... nevertheless...") can cancel out and return the logic to continuation — always trace the full chain.

Your Turn — Identify the Logic

For each sentence, decide: does the blank need a word that matches or opposes the sentence's other key idea?

1 "Despite years of drought, the region's agricultural output remained surprisingly ______."
Show the logic

Contrast ("despite," "surprisingly") — the blank should mean something like stable or resilient, opposing the expected decline from drought.

2 "The novel's plot is not merely predictable but downright ______, offering readers no reason to keep turning pages."
Show the logic

Continuation ("not merely... but") — the blank should intensify "predictable," meaning something like tedious or tiresome.

3 "The scientist's early hypothesis was widely mocked; her later findings, however, proved ______."
Show the logic

Contrast ("however") — the blank should oppose "mocked," meaning something like vindicating or prescient.

4 "The city's new transit system is efficient; likewise, its bike-sharing program has proven ______."
Show the logic

Continuation ("likewise") — the blank should match "efficient," meaning something like effective or successful.

5 "Although the critic praised the film's cinematography, she found its plot ______ and its dialogue stilted."
Show the logic

Contrast ("although") — the blank should oppose "praised," meaning something negative like contrived or uninspired (reinforced by the continuation word "and... stilted").
