Why Parallel Structure Matters

When a sentence contains a list ("X, Y, and ______") or a balanced comparison ("both X and ______," "rather than X, ______"), the blank must match the other items in both grammatical form and meaning. This gives you two independent checks on the correct answer, not just one.

The core method: identify the other item(s) in the list or comparison, note their exact grammatical form (gerund, past participle, adjective, noun), and require the blank to match that form and a compatible meaning.

Common Parallel Patterns

Worked Examples

Example 1 — List

"The consultant's report recommended cutting costs, streamlining operations, and ______ employee morale through more transparent communication."

READ THE SIGNALThe list "cutting... streamlining... ______" requires a gerund parallel to the other two verbs, with a meaning that fits "morale... through transparent communication" — a word like boosting or improving.
TRAPA non-gerund like "improvement" breaks the grammatical parallelism even though its meaning is close.
Example 2 — "Rather than"

"Rather than ______ the underlying problem, the new regulations merely relocated it to another department."

READ THE SIGNAL"Rather than" sets up an opposition with "relocated" — the blank needs a gerund meaning the opposite of "merely relocating," such as resolving or solving.
TRAPA word like "creating" fits the gerund form but not the required contrast with "relocated" — form alone is not enough; meaning must match too.

Common Mistakes

  • Matching meaning but not form: a semantically perfect word in the wrong grammatical form (noun instead of gerund, adjective instead of adverb) is still incorrect.
  • Matching form but not meaning: the reverse trap — a correctly formed word that doesn't fit the sentence's actual logic.
  • Missing a long list: when a list has four or five items, it's easy to lose track of the pattern by the time you reach the blank — quickly scan all items first.
  • Overlooking "neither... nor" as a negation: both items in a "neither... nor" list are being denied together, so the blank should belong to the same category as the other item, not oppose it.
