Introduction: What is GRE Verbal Reasoning?
GRE Verbal Reasoning measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material, understand relationships among words and concepts, and reason from incomplete data. Since the test was shortened in September 2023, Verbal now consists of 2 sections with 27 questions total, completed in about 41 minutes — with no separate "transfer time" since everything is answered on-screen.

Section-level adaptive: your performance on the first Verbal section determines the difficulty of the second Verbal section. A strong first section unlocks harder (and higher-scoring) questions in the second.

Test Format & Structure
Each Verbal section blends all three question types. Roughly half the questions are Reading Comprehension (attached to short 1-3 paragraph passages), with Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence making up the rest.

The 3 Question Types
All GRE Verbal questions fall into three families. Each is explained below with a worked example and the one tip that matters most.

Text Completionটেক্সট কমপ্লিশন
Fill 1-3 blanks in a short passage, choosing from 3 options per blank (5 for a single blank). All blanks must be correct to get credit — no partial marks.
Sentence Equivalenceসেন্টেন্স ইকুইভ্যালেন্স
Choose 2 of 6 answer choices that both complete the sentence sensibly and produce sentences with the same meaning.
Reading Comprehensionরিডিং কম্প্রিহেনশন
Short passages (1 paragraph to 1-2 pages) followed by multiple-choice (select one), multiple-choice (select all that apply), or select-a-sentence questions.
Worked Example: Text Completion
"Despite the critic's initially ___(i)___ review, the novel went on to become a bestseller, suggesting that popular taste does not always ___(ii)___ critical opinion."
Logic"Despite" signals a contrast: a negative review (i) contrasts with commercial success. Blank (ii) needs a word meaning "align with." Answer: (i) scathing/disparaging (ii) mirror/reflect.

Essential Skills & Strategies
GRE Verbal rewards two combined skills: a large, precise vocabulary and the ability to trace an author's logic through signal words like "however," "moreover," and "although."

For Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence
- Ignore the answer choices at first — predict your own word. প্রথমে নিজে একটি শব্দ অনুমান করুন।
- Identify the sentence's logical direction: continuation (same idea) or contrast (opposite idea). বাক্যের যুক্তির দিক চিহ্নিত করুন।
- Build root-word and prefix/suffix knowledge to guess unfamiliar words. মূল শব্দ ও উপসর্গ-প্রত্যয় শিখুন।
For Reading Comprehension
- Read for structure first: what is the author's main claim, and how do paragraphs relate? প্রথমে কাঠামো বুঝুন।
- Distinguish the author's opinion from facts/other viewpoints they mention. লেখকের মতামত ও অন্যের মতামত আলাদা করুন।
- For "select all that apply," test each option independently against the text. প্রতিটি অপশন আলাদাভাবে যাচাই করুন।
Time rule: roughly 1.5 minutes per question. On the computer-adaptive test you can skip and return to questions within a section, so triage: answer easy questions first.

How Verbal Reasoning Is Scored
Verbal Reasoning is reported on a scaled score of 130–170, in 1-point increments. Because the test is section-level adaptive, your raw number of correct answers converts differently depending on how difficult your second section was.

Verbal weighs heavily for humanities/social science programs and less for engineering/hard-science programs, which often weight Quant more. Check your target program's typical admitted scores before setting a goal.

Do's
- Predict your own answer before reading the choices. উত্তর দেখার আগে অনুমান করুন।
- Learn roots, prefixes and suffixes systematically. মূল শব্দ পদ্ধতিগতভাবে শিখুন।
- Read one dense article (science/opinion) daily. প্রতিদিন একটি জটিল আর্টিকেল পড়ুন।
- Attempt every question — there's no penalty for guessing. প্রতিটি প্রশ্নের চেষ্টা করুন, ভুল উত্তরে নম্বর কাটা যায় না।
Don'ts
- Don't memorize word lists without example sentences. উদাহরণ বাক্য ছাড়া শব্দ মুখস্থ করবেন না।
- Don't pick a Sentence Equivalence answer that isn't part of a matching pair. জোড়া ছাড়া উত্তর বাছাই করবেন না।
- Don't bring outside knowledge into Reading Comprehension — answer from the text only. শুধু প্যাসেজ থেকে উত্তর দিন।
- Don't spend more than 2 minutes stuck on one question. এক প্রশ্নে ২ মিনিটের বেশি নয়।
Your Path to a 160+ Verbal Score
Phase 1: Vocabulary Foundation
Goal: Build the core high-frequency GRE word list. মূল উচ্চ-ফ্রিকোয়েন্সি শব্দ শেখা।
Do: Learn 15-20 words/day with example sentences and roots; do 1 untimed Text Completion set daily. প্রতিদিন ১৫-২০টি শব্দ, উদাহরণসহ।
Phase 2: Skill Building
Goal: Apply vocabulary to real question types. প্রকৃত প্রশ্নে শব্দভান্ডার প্রয়োগ।

Phase 3: Full Practice & Timing
Goal: Perfect pacing under real section-adaptive pressure. প্রকৃত সময়ের চাপে গতি নিখুঁত করা।
