Introduction: What is GRE Analytical Writing?
Analytical Writing measures your ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and support a position with relevant reasons and examples. Since the September 2023 revision, the section consists of just one task — "Analyze an Issue" — in 30 minutes (the separate "Analyze an Argument" task was removed).

Why the Argument task was removed: ETS shortened the whole GRE by nearly 2 hours in 2023, and Analytical Writing went from 2 tasks (60 minutes) to 1 task (30 minutes) as part of that change. Older prep books written before 2023 will still describe both tasks — ignore the Argument task section if you're using one.

The Analyze an Issue Task
You are given a general statement or claim about education, society, politics, art, or another broad topic, along with specific instructions on how to respond (e.g., discuss the extent to which you agree, or consider both sides). There is no "correct" position — the task rewards a clear, well-reasoned argument, not a particular opinion.

"Governments should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development." Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement above and explain your reasoning.
Recommended 5-Paragraph Structure
1. Introduction
Restate the issue in your own words and state your position clearly (a qualified "it depends" position is fine and often stronger than an absolute one).
2-4. Body Paragraphs (2-3)
One clear reason per paragraph, each backed by a specific, concrete example (historical, scientific, personal, or hypothetical). Address at least one counterargument to show balanced thinking.
5. Conclusion
Summarize your position without simply repeating the introduction word-for-word; note any conditions under which your view might change.
Spend the first 5 minutes planning before writing a single sentence — an essay with a clear plan almost always outscores one written stream-of-consciousness, even with less total writing time.

The Official Scoring Rubric
Each essay is scored 0-6 (half-point increments) by a trained human rater and an automated scoring engine ("e-rater"). If the two differ significantly, a second human rater reviews the essay.

Essential Skills & Strategies
Before You Write
- Brainstorm 2-3 specific examples before deciding your position. অবস্থান ঠিক করার আগে উদাহরণ ভাবুন।

While You Write

- Don't memorize a pre-written essay and force-fit it to the prompt — raters can detect this. মুখস্থ রচনা জোর করে বসাবেন না।

Your Path to a 4.5+ Writing Score
Phase 1: Structure & Rubric
Goal: Internalize the 5-paragraph structure and official rubric. ৫-অনুচ্ছেদ কাঠামো ও রুব্রিক বোঝা।
Do: Read 3-4 sample score-6 essays from ETS's official pool; outline (don't write) 5 prompts. নমুনা রচনা পড়ুন; প্রম্পটের রূপরেখা তৈরি করুন।
Phase 2: Timed Writing Practice
Goal: Build the muscle memory of writing a full essay in 30 minutes. ৩০ মিনিটে সম্পূর্ণ রচনা লেখার অভ্যাস।
Do: Write 2-3 full timed essays weekly; compare against model answers and the checklist. সপ্তাহে ২-৩টি সময়বদ্ধ রচনা লিখুন।
Phase 3: Refinement

Build a flexible example bank in advance. Since Issue prompts cover broad, recurring themes (education, technology, government, individualism vs. collectivism), a handful of well-prepared examples can be adapted to most prompts you'll see.
