Passage 1: Right and Left-Handedness in Humans

What it's about: The passage reviews research into why most people are right-handed. Professor Turner and others describe a "distinctive asymmetry" in the human body, and the passage links handedness to the way the brain's two hemispheres are organised — for example, the evolution of speech with a right-hand preference, and the fact that when the left hemisphere is damaged, recovery of speech is often better in left-handers. It reports figures for how common left-handedness is and how it differs between males and females, and notes that this asymmetry exists even before birth.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Distinctive asymmetry in the body.
  • Brain hemispheres shape handedness.
  • More left-handed males than females.
  • Present before birth.

Passage 2: Migratory Beekeeping

What it's about: The passage describes how migratory beekeepers in the USA move their hives around the country to follow the flowering of different crops. It follows the beekeeper's year: they prepare and move hives when the colonies are full, use smoke to calm the bees, charge farmers to let bees pollinate crops, and use machines (an uncapper and a carousel) and centrifugal force to extract honey from the combs. It also describes the parts of a hive — the hexagonal cells, frames, a screen and the brood chamber.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Hives move to follow the flowers.
  • Farmers pay for pollination.
  • Machines extract the honey.
  • Hive parts: cells, frames, brood chamber.

Passage 3: Tourism

What it's about: Taken from a sociology book (The Tourist Gaze), this passage examines what tourism really is. It argues that tourism is one way in which work and leisure are organised as separate spheres in modern societies. It introduces the idea of the "tourist gaze" — the way tourists look at places differently from daily life — and shows how anticipation is built up through non-tourist practices such as film and TV, how tourists seek a heightened sensitivity to landscape, and how the "mass tourist" travels in guided groups and enjoys deliberately inauthentic, contrived attractions.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Work vs leisure as separate spheres.
  • The "tourist gaze": a special way of seeing.
  • Anticipation built by media.
  • Mass tourism can be contrived.
