Passage 1: Spoken Corpus Comes to Life
কথ্য ভাষার corpus
What it's about: The passage describes a project to build a spoken corpus — a huge, recorded database of real everyday speech — to improve dictionaries and a language-learning tool called the Language Activator. Alongside the company's existing written corpus, the spoken data shows how key words are followed by related phrases, how meanings and forms differ in speech, and how spoken English uses noise and pauses to play for time and convey emotion, doubt and irony. The passage argues that spoken English works very differently from written English.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- A spoken corpus records real speech. কথ্য ভান্ডার।
- Improves dictionaries & learning tools. অভিধান উন্নত।
- Speech ≠ writing: pauses, noise, emotion. কথা ও লেখা ভিন্ন।
- Key words followed by related phrases. মূল শব্দ + phrase।

Passage 2: Moles Happy as Homes Go Underground
মাটির নিচে বাড়ি
What it's about: The passage looks at the growing idea of building houses (and other buildings) underground. It notes that developers usually prefer conventional, mass-produced housing because it sells quickly, so underground homes have been slow to spread. It gives examples from Europe: South Limburg planners welcomed a Dutch scheme, noise embankments built beside roads, an underground Olivetti centre in Italy, the question of how well people adapt to living underground, and a baker who built a cool underground room for his bakery business.

Passage 3: A Workaholic Economy
কর্মব্যসনী অর্থনীতি
What it's about: The passage argues that, contrary to what many expect, working hours in the USA have increased noticeably since 1970 even though technology was meant to give people more leisure. It links this to a "jobless" economic recovery in which real wages have stagnated, and discusses the rise of part-time work and studies claiming part-timers can be highly productive. Overall it presents the modern economy as one that drives people to work ever longer hours.
