Passage 1: Stepwells
What it's about: Stepwells are a traditional form of water store found mainly in the dry states of Gujarat and Rajasthan in India. Instead of a simple round well, long flights of steps lead down many storeys to the water in a tank at the bottom, so people could still reach water when the level dropped during drought. The deep, shaded structures were also cool places to gather and had religious meaning; many were richly decorated with pavilions, carvings and verandas. After piped water arrived, most fell into neglect, and one famous well was even damaged by an earthquake. Today several — such as those at Patan and Abhaneri — are being restored and visited by tourists.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Purpose: reach water even when the level falls in drought.
- Design: storeys of steps down to a tank; four sides; verandas.
- Uses: water, cool shade, social and religious gatherings.
- Now: neglected after piped water, some restored for tourists.

Passage 2: European Transport Systems 1990–2010
What it's about: This passage reviews European transport policy. Mobility grew fast in the 1990s, but road traffic — both cars and freight lorries — expanded far more than rail or water transport, causing congestion, pollution and safety problems. The writer argues that transport must be integrated with other policies (land use, economy, environment) rather than treated on its own, and that simply building more roads does not solve congestion because new capacity fills up. Ideas discussed include charging users the real ("external") costs of travel, shifting freight to rail and water, and recognising that people's transport choices reflect their whole way of life.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Growth: road traffic rose much faster than rail/water.
- Problem: congestion, pollution, safety.
- Argument: integrate transport with other policies.
- Tools: charge real costs; shift freight modes.

Passage 3: The Psychology of Innovation
What it's about: Why are some organisations more innovative than others? The passage argues that creativity comes less from money and more from how employees are treated and led. People are most inventive when they feel valued and trusted, are given some freedom and time, and work in a supportive climate; heavy monitoring, pressure and fear of failure tend to kill new ideas. It cites researchers and company examples (including a design-led change at a large consumer-goods firm) to show that reorganising people, encouraging cross-department contact and rewarding effort — not just results — help ideas flourish.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Claim: culture and leadership drive innovation, not just money.
- Helps: feeling valued, freedom, time, safety to fail.
- Hurts: pressure, surveillance, fear.
- Evidence: researchers + company redesign examples.
