Passage 1: The Story of Silk

What it's about: A history of silk from ancient China to today. Legend credits its discovery to Lei Tzu, wife of the Yellow Emperor, who devised a reel to draw thread from cocoons. Silkworm farming was done by women; silk became a symbol of status limited at first to royalty, and was even used as currency and to make paper. It also served as diplomatic gifts and to make fishing lines, bowstrings and musical instruments. Trade created the Silk Road, monks later smuggled silkworm eggs to spread production, and modern China still exports silk (though much is now competing with synthetics like nylon).

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Origins: Lei Tzu's legend; a reel to draw thread.
  • Status: silk as royalty's privilege, currency and paper.
  • Spread: the Silk Road; monks smuggled eggs.
  • Today: China still exports; synthetics compete.

Passage 2: Great Migrations

What it's about: Animal migration is more than just movement. The biologist Hugh Dingle identified five features that mark true migration: prolonged, roughly straight-line travel outside familiar areas; special preparation (like overeating) and arrival behaviour; and an intense focus that keeps the animal on course. An arctic tern, for example, ignores food along its 20,000 km flight because its "larger purpose" is to arrive and breed. Other biologists (like Joel Berger) define migration more simply. The passage also considers unusual cases such as aphids, and looks at the practical study of migration — its speed, plains, bottlenecks and corridors.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Dingle's five features define true migration.
  • Focus: the arctic tern ignores food to reach its goal.
  • Different definitions: Berger's is simpler.
  • Study: speed, plains, bottlenecks and corridors.

Passage 3: A Book Preface on Mathematics

What it's about: This is the preface to a book called How the Other Half Thinks: Adventures in Mathematical Reasoning. The author argues that some genuinely advanced mathematics can be understood by anyone, using no more than a little arithmetic and common sense — a beginner could follow every step. His aim is to let non-mathematical readers experience the beauty and reasoning of maths, and to bridge the gap between the "two cultures" (arts and sciences, the intuitive and the analytical brain). He gives examples of people with seemingly incompatible talents, and notes that unlike most science books, this one does not leave the maths out; a lawyer even found studying certain mathematics (theorems) helpful for law.

How the Other Half Thinks: Adventures in Mathematical Reasoning বইয়ের ভূমিকা।

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Accessible: advanced ideas anyone can follow with basic arithmetic.
  • Aim: reveal the beauty and reasoning of maths.
  • Two cultures: bridging intuitive and analytical thinking.
  • Not typical: the maths is kept in, not left out.
