This is a study companion for Cambridge IELTS 12, Test 5, Listening. Use it with your own copy of the book and its audio: do the test first, then use this page to see what each section was about, learn the vocabulary, and understand every answer and what you should have listened for.

Golden rule of Listening: the recording plays only once and the answers come in order. Before each section, read the questions and predict the type of word needed. Watch for distractors.

Section 1: Family Excursions
Situation: a phone enquiry about family day-trips offered by a tour company — a boat cruise on a lake, a farm visit, and cycling trips, with details of what is included, prices and equipment. Question type: note/table completion (Q1–10), mostly ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER. পরিস্থিতি: একটি ট্যুর কোম্পানির পারিবারিক ভ্রমণ নিয়ে ফোনে খোঁজ — লেকে নৌ-ভ্রমণ, খামার পরিদর্শন, সাইক্লিং; কী অন্তর্ভুক্ত, দাম, সরঞ্জাম। নোট/টেবিল পূরণ।

Section 2: Talk to New Kitchen Assistants
Situation: a supervisor gives an introductory talk to newly hired kitchen assistants — their duties, rules, hygiene, breaks and safety. Section 3: A Paper on Public Libraries
Situation: two students, Trudie and Stewart, discuss a paper (assignment) they are writing about public libraries — how libraries have changed and a study of their local library.
