Passage 1: Cork
What it's about: Cork is the bark of the cork oak, a tree that grows mainly in southern Europe and North Africa, especially the Alentejo region of Portugal. The passage explains the tree's unusual biology (it can regrow its thick, protective bark after harvesting and lives for up to two centuries), how cork is stripped by hand without harming the tree, and its useful properties — light, buoyant, fire-resistant and airtight. Its most famous use is as a bottle stopper, but cheaper aluminium screw caps and plastic have threatened that market. The passage argues that the cork industry is worth protecting because cork forests support biodiversity and help prevent desertification.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- The tree: the cork oak regrows its bark; harvesting does not kill it.
- Properties: light, elastic, impermeable, fire-resistant — ideal for stoppers, flooring and insulation.
- Market threat: screw caps are cheaper and more convenient, hurting cork's image.
- Why it matters: sustainable cork forests protect biodiversity and stop desertification.

Passage 2: Collecting as a Hobby
What it's about: The passage explores why people collect things — from antiques and stamps to everyday objects. It argues that collecting is full of contradictions: it can be about serious knowledge and the value of the objects, but it is also driven by the emotional thrill of "the hunt", the desire to complete a set, and the wish to bring order to the world. Some collections are valuable, others worthless; some collectors are systematic and educational, others simply enjoy the chase. It ends by noting that collecting can be seen positively (as in the novel Trainspotting, where a character collects experiences) rather than as mere accumulation.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Many motives: knowledge, value, order, and the emotional "hunt".
- Contradictions: collecting can be rational and educational, or purely emotional.
- The set: the drive to complete a collection can feel endless.
- A positive view: collecting experiences, not just objects.

Passage 3: What's the Purpose of Gaining Knowledge?
What it's about: The writer, a professor, reflects on why we gain knowledge. He describes two very different courses he took: a marketing course and, oddly, a course called "Arson for Profit" that taught the science of how buildings burn (fire science) so that investigators could gather evidence and bring insurance fraudsters to prosecution. He uses these to argue that knowledge should not only be judged by whether it is immediately "useful" or profitable; learning has value in itself, even when its practical payoff is not obvious. The philosopher Immanuel Kant is referenced in support of learning for its own sake.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Two courses: marketing and the surprising "Arson for Profit".
- Fire science: understanding how fires burn helps investigators.
- Practical use: gathering evidence to prosecute insurance fraud.
- Main argument: knowledge has value beyond immediate usefulness (Kant).
