Passage 1: The History of Glass

What it's about: A history of glass from its natural origins to the modern industry. The earliest glass was natural obsidian, used for sharp tools like spears and for beads. People later learned to make glass by heating minerals, though early glass contained impurities. The Romans spread glass-making across their empire. A major breakthrough came when George Ravenscroft added lead to produce clearer "lead crystal", solving the problem of clouding. The passage also covers how governments taxed glass (the Excise Act) and how it is recycled today.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Natural start: obsidian used for spears and beads. obsidian।
  • Early problems: made glass had impurities.
  • Romans: spread glass-making widely.
  • Breakthrough: lead crystal fixed clouding; later taxes.

Passage 2: Bring Back the Big Cats

What it's about: Writer John Vesty argues that Britain should reintroduce animals that once lived there but have vanished — in particular the lynx, a wild cat. The passage discusses evidence that the lynx survived in Britain more recently than once thought, the idea of "rewilding" (restoring natural ecosystems), how changes in farming have left more suitable habitat, and the practical arguments for and against bringing the lynx back — including its effect on deer numbers and possible benefits for tourism.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • The proposal: reintroduce the lynx to Britain. lynx
  • Rewilding: restoring lost natural ecosystems. rewilding।
  • Habitat: farming changes left suitable land.

Passage 3: UK Companies Need More Effective Boards of Directors

What it's about: After the 2008 financial crisis, the way companies are governed — especially the role of their boards of directors — came under intense scrutiny. The passage argues that the classic model, in which part-time, independent "non-executive" directors oversee a company, is under strain: the workload has grown, agendas are overloaded, and much board business is handed to committees, so the full board may not properly debate the biggest issues. One radical idea is a "professional board" of members who work several days a week. The passage weighs whether such changes would make boards more effective, and notes that boards can focus too much on short-term financial matters and must sometimes accept the views of shareholders.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Scrutiny: the 2008 crisis put governance under the spotlight.
  • Strain: heavy workload and overloaded agendas.
  • Committees: board business is devolved, reducing full debate.
  • A radical idea: a "professional board"; short-term focus is a risk. professional board।
