Passage 2: Why Being Bored Is Stimulating — and Useful, Too
What it's about: Boredom is hard to define and includes many mental states. Researchers describe several types of boredom, argue it can boost creativity (Sandi Mann), or see it as an undesirable but adaptive state (John Eastwood). Peter Toohey compares it to disgust — a signal to avoid harmful situations. The passage weighs whether boredom is harmful or useful.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Hard to define: Boredom overlaps with frustration, apathy and indifference.
- Types: Thomas Goetz identified five distinct types; "reactant" is the most damaging.
- Creativity: Sandi Mann found boredom can make people more creative.
- Adaptive but toxic: John Eastwood sees boredom as undesirable but possibly protective, like pain.

Passage 3: Artificial Artists — Can Computers Really Create Works of Art?
What it's about: Computer programs like The Painting Fool and composer software (David Cope's EMI) now produce art and music that can fool audiences. The passage asks where the human artist ends and the computer's creativity begins. Simon Colton argues machines can show imagination; critics like Douglas Hofstadter and Geraint Wiggins disagree. Studies (David Moffat) show people judge art differently once they know a computer made it.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Machines making art: Programs paint and compose; some fool audiences into thinking a human made the work.
- Where does creativity begin? Aaron is just a tool for the programmer's ideas; the Painting Fool needs less direction.
- Debate: Colton claims imagination; Hofstadter/Wiggins are sceptical; double standards affect how we judge computer art.
- Perception: Moffat's study — people rate art differently when told a computer made it.
