Passage 1: The Importance of Children's Play
What it's about: Researchers at Cambridge University's PEDAL centre (Whitebread, Baker, Gibson and others) argue that play is not trivial but central to how children develop. Play may build self-control, problem-solving and writing skills and signal healthy emotional development — yet its importance has been "lost", and there is little hard evidence of its long-term impact, which the centre now aims to provide.
- Play & self-control: Baker suggests play supports children's self-control (awareness of their own thinking); children with more self-control solved unfamiliar problems faster.
- Emotional health: Gibson says playful behaviour signals healthy social-emotional development and can help diagnose disorders such as autism.
- Play & writing: Whitebread's work shows a playful stimulus (dolls, then Lego) helped children write longer, better-structured stories and always find something to write about.
- Play undervalued: Play is now seen as trivial or opposed to "work"; the writers urge a "rich diet of play" for its contributions to arts, science and technology.

Passage 3: Motivational Factors and the Hospitality Industry
What it's about: A discussion of how hotels can get and keep good employees. It reviews Human Resource Management (HRM) research: the hospitality industry has traditionally had weak HR practices and high staff turnover, but studies suggest that better working conditions, recognition and support increase motivation and make employees more likely to stay.
- The challenge: Hotel success depends on strong employee performance; what HRM should firms invest in?
- Weak tradition: Pfeffer says firms must invest in HRM for competitive advantage, but hospitality has been dominated by underdeveloped HR (Lucas); high turnover is a recurring problem.
- What helps: Ng & Sorensen — recognition, teamwork and removing obstacles make employees feel obligated to stay; support builds confidence and motivation.
