Passage 2: Back to the Future of Skyscraper Design

What it's about: Professor Alan Short (Cambridge) argues that skyscrapers and large public buildings waste energy on air conditioning. His book shows that clever 19th- and early-20th-century designs — especially naturally ventilated hospitals designed by John Shaw Billings — could cool big buildings without sealing them, if we abandon our reliance on mechanical air conditioning.

  • A–B: Short's 30-year research shows the "crisis in building design" is here; he calls for an end to sealed, air-conditioned buildings. A–B:
  • C: Sealed buildings use 40–50% of Western electricity; glass-and-steel skyscrapers are symbols of status, not practical. C:
  • D: He digitally modelled Billings' ventilated hospitals (Johns Hopkins) and found the airflow would protect patients from TB pathogens.
  • Later: The passage covers miasma theory, cholera, communal and public buildings, and how air conditioning was aggressively marketed. পরে: miasma, cholera, বিজ্ঞাপন।

Passage 3: Why Companies Should Welcome Disorder

What it's about: "Organisation" is a huge industry, yet many businesses still fail and workers feel dissatisfied. The writer argues that our obsession with order and efficiency is misguided: order has diminishing returns, and beyond a point more organisation actually reduces productivity. Companies would do better to accept some disorder.

  • A: The organisation industry is huge; we are told to structure everything to be productive, delighting perfectionists.
  • B: Ironically, business failures and dissatisfaction have risen. B:
  • C–D: Frederick Taylor's efficiency ideas spread; new research says the obsession with efficiency and the assumption that order = productivity is wrong. C–D: Taylor;
  • E onward: Order has diminishing returns; beyond a point, more order reduces productivity, so some disorder is beneficial. E:
