Passage 1: The Concept of Intelligence
What it's about: The passage explains that "intelligence" has no single agreed definition. It contrasts explicit theories (built from people's actual performance on tests) with implicit theories (ordinary people's ideas about what intelligence is), and shows that different cultures value different mental skills. It also links three historical views of society — Hamiltonian, Jeffersonian and Jacksonian — to different beliefs about how far intelligence is fixed and who deserves education.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Two kinds of theory: Explicit theories come from data on how people perform; implicit theories are everyday people's own notions of what "being smart" means. explicit = পারফরম্যান্স-ডেটা; implicit = সাধারণ ধারণা।
- Culture matters: What counts as intelligent behaviour differs from society to society and even within one society.
- Three social models: The Hamiltonian view is pessimistic (people need strong leadership); the Jeffersonian view rewards merit and effort; the Jacksonian view assumes people are basically equal. Each implies a different education policy.

Passage 2: Saving Bugs to Find New Drugs
What it's about: Zoologist Ross Piper argues that insects — the most diverse group of animals on Earth — are a hugely under-explored source of new medicines. Because insects have evolved chemical defences against predators, disease and parasites, their bodies hold molecules that could become drugs such as antibiotics. He calls for careful bioprospecting before habitats and species are lost.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Untapped diversity: Insects vastly outnumber other animals, yet very few have been screened for useful compounds.
- Why insects are promising: Constant battles with predators, prey, disease and parasites have driven them to evolve powerful defensive chemicals.
- Bioprospecting: Researchers (e.g. at Aberystwyth University) search insect chemistry for antibiotics and other drugs — but habitat loss threatens this resource.

Passage 3: The Power of Play
What it's about: Play is a fundamental part of healthy child development, benefiting children socially, cognitively, physically and emotionally — yet children now play far less than they did decades ago, as academic pressure replaces play with test preparation. The writer criticises the false split between "play" and "learning", reviews attempts to define play, and lists criteria such as: play is pleasurable, intrinsically motivated, and process- rather than goal-oriented.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Play is a right: The UN recognised play as a fundamental right of every child (1989); it develops the whole child.
- Play is declining: Rising academic standards replace play with test preparation, creating a false "play vs learning" divide.
- Defining play: No full consensus, but key criteria — pleasurable, intrinsically motivated, process-oriented (no external goal).
