Passage 1: The Secret of Staying Young

What it's about: The ant Pheidole dentata shows almost no signs of aging. Researcher Ysabel Giraldo tracked ants of exactly known ages and tested how they cared for young, followed food trails, responded to light, stayed active and attacked prey. Old ants performed as well as young ones, and their brains showed no age-related decline in cells or in serotonin and dopamine — findings that may hold clues to healthy aging in humans.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • No decline: Old workers do everything as well as young ones; their brains stay sharp.
  • Exact ages tested: Giraldo tracked ants from pupa to adult across four age ranges (up to ~140 days).
  • Tests: caring for young, following food trails, response to light, activity, and attacking prey — old ants did as well or better.
  • Brain: no rise in dying cells, no drop in serotonin/dopamine (unlike human aging).

Passage 2: Why Zoos Are Good

What it's about: Scientist David Hone argues in favour of zoos. He claims animals in good zoos can have a life as good as (or better than) in the wild — safe, well-fed and free of predators — and that zoos serve key purposes: conservation (breeding reservoir populations and reintroductions), education, direct communication/outreach, and research. He concludes that zoos are essential to the survival of many species.

  • A: Good zoos give a safe, well-fed life; "free" is not automatically "good".
  • B: Zoos aid conservation — reservoir populations and reintroductions. B:
  • C: Zoos educate people who would never see wild animals. C:
  • D–E: Outreach/communication and research on captive animals help wild populations. D–E:
  • F: Conclusion — zoos are essential to species survival. F:

Passage 3: The Threat of Marine Debris

What it's about: Ecologist Chelsea Rochman and a working group reviewed over a hundred papers on marine debris (ocean trash) to check whether the perceived threats are real. In 83% of cases the dangers were proven; most came from large plastic pieces (entanglement, injury). Far less is known about microplastic (pieces under 5mm), and many studies had design weaknesses — focusing on individual animals rather than whole populations. This untitled passage's best title (Q40) is "Assessing the threat of marine debris."

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Testing perceived threats: 366 perceived threats studied; 83% proven real.
  • Large plastic worst: Most dangers came from large plastic debris (entanglement, eating).
  • Microplastic unknown: Little research on pieces under 5mm; a mussel study found no harm. microplastic
  • Study weaknesses: Many focused on individuals, not populations/ecosystems.
