Passage 1: Nutmeg — a Valuable Spice
What it's about: The nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) once grew only on the tiny Banda Islands of Indonesia, and the two spices it yields — nutmeg (the seed) and mace (the red aril) — made it hugely valuable. The passage traces the trade's history: Arab secrecy, the Portuguese, the Dutch VOC monopoly, the plague boom, the famous swap of Run island for Manhattan, and how smuggling, a tsunami and the British finally broke the monopoly.
- The tree & fruit: Native to South-East Asia, the nutmeg tree has dark green oval leaves and pale yellow, pear-shaped fruit. A fleshy husk encases the fruit and splits open when ripe, revealing a shiny seed (nutmeg) wrapped in a red aril (which becomes mace).
- Middle Ages trade: Nutmeg was a costly flavouring, medicine and preservative. The Arabs were the exclusive importers and never revealed the source; their Arab-Venetian dominance ended in 1512 when the Portuguese reached the Bandas.
- The Dutch rise: The Portuguese subcontracted distribution to Dutch traders; when Portugal fell under Spanish rule the Dutch were locked out, so in 1602 they founded the VOC (Dutch East India Company), the richest firm in the world by 1617.
- The plague boom: As the plague spread, doctors believed nutmeg was a cure; demand exploded and nutmeg could sell for 68,000 times its cost. Short supply was the only problem — the Dutch seized the opportunity.
- Dutch monopoly: In 1621 the Dutch took the Bandas, concentrated production, and covered exported seeds with lime so none could be grown elsewhere. The one obstacle was tiny Run island, held by the British — traded to the Dutch under the Treaty of Breda (1667) in exchange for Manhattan (New Amsterdam → New York).
- End of the monopoly: In 1770 Pierre Poivre smuggled plants to Mauritius (then Grenada/Caribbean); in 1778 a volcanic eruption caused a tsunami that wiped out half the groves; the British seized the islands in 1809. Today nutmeg grows in Indonesia, the Caribbean, India, Malaysia, PNG and Sri Lanka.

Passage 2: Driverless Cars
What it's about: Automation is coming to vehicles themselves. The writer weighs the drivers of this change — safety, freeing up travel time, and mobility for older and disabled people — then explores wider effects: car-sharing, far fewer vehicles needed, changed ownership and manufacturing, and the technical, legal and social hurdles still to overcome.
- A: Car making has used automation since the 1970s; now the new challenge is automation of the vehicles themselves. Limited self-driving has existed 50+ years, but Google's 2010 street trials sped things up.
- B: Two motives: safety (over 90% of collisions involve human error) and freeing time — passengers could work, socialise or relax, and older/disabled travellers gain autonomy.
- C: Wider effects: the average car is parked over 90% of its life, so automation makes car-sharing far more viable, especially in cities — meeting demand with fewer vehicles.
- D: An MIT study of Singapore found fewer than 30% of vehicles would be needed with full automated sharing. A Michigan study: ownership could fall 43%, but annual mileage would double, so faster turnover means production may not fall.
- E: If people buy access to a range of vehicles via a mobility provider, they can pick the best car for each journey — likely boosting smaller, efficient vehicles, with specialised ones for exceptional trips.
- F: Hurdles: technical (reliability in all conditions), regulatory (liability and enforcement) and societal (public trust and acceptance). F:
- G: Targeted research can likely solve these within 10 years; alongside telepresence and VR, change is certain, and flexibility will be vital for manufacturers.

Passage 3: What is Exploration?
What it's about: A reflective essay by a travel writer arguing that the urge to explore is universal — part of what makes us human. He examines how different famous explorers (Fiennes, Bonington, Hanbury-Tenison, Thesiger) each define "exploration" according to their own field, then declares his own bias: as a writer, he is most interested in the exploration of ideas — casting fresh light even on familiar places.
- We are all explorers: The desire to discover and share knowledge is part of human success — from ancient scouts to the Penan of Borneo and a visitor finding their way through the New York subway.
- A "peculiar breed"?: We think of explorers as different, yet the enquiring instinct is in everyone — artists, marine biologists, astronomers all test the borders of the unknown daily.
- Exploration as inner journey: Thomas Hardy used the landscape of Egdon Heath to explore human desires and fears; Peter Fleming described the strange feeling of returning home after a long journey.
- Competing definitions: Ran Fiennes = doing something no one has done and something scientifically useful; Chris Bonington = physically touching the unknown; Robin Hanbury-Tenison = an explorer changes the world (he campaigns for tribal peoples); Wilfred Thesiger = bringing back information from a remote place, regardless of self-discovery. Each reflects the person's own field.
- The writer's bias: He has done many unique expeditions and lived with isolated/uncontacted peoples, but believes the land surface is now largely known — exploration is down to details, an era of specialists. What matters to him is how a fresh interpretation gives readers new insight.
