Passage 1: Could Urban Engineers Learn from Dance?

What it's about: The way we travel around cities shapes how sustainable and healthy they are, yet transport engineering still relies on abstract models of efficiency and speed. The writer argues that the techniques choreographers use to design movement — "thinking with the body" — could give engineers new tools to design streets for emotional as well as functional effects.

  • A: Transport accounts for ~30% of energy use in developed nations; how we travel affects health, social life and the air we breathe, yet engineering still assumes efficiency, speed and quantitative data. We need radical change.
  • B: Dance might help — not dancing to work, but using choreographers' techniques. Richard Sennett argues urban design has suffered a mind–body split since the architectural blueprint.
  • C: Medieval builders improvised using knowledge of materials and site; today designs are stored in media technologies that detach the designer and simplify reality.
  • D: Example: Atlanta's Peachtree Center (1970s) failed — designers trusted computer-aided design and ignored the climate, so street cafés could not work in the hot sun and the car park felt unwelcoming.
  • E: British guard rails, designed to keep traffic flowing, guide pedestrians to staggered crossings (one per carriageway), making crossings feel longer, hurting the least mobile, causing dangerous crossings, dividing communities and reducing healthy transport — so many are now being removed.
  • F: If designers could "think with their bodies" like dancers, they might find better solutions. Choreography shares engineering's aim of designing movement within limited space.
  • G: David Kirsh, watching choreographer Wayne McGregor, described "thinking with the body". Engineers could improvise and model designs full-scale, and design for emotional as well as functional effects.

Passage 2: Should We Try to Bring Extinct Species Back to Life?

What it's about: "De-extinction" uses cloning and genetics to try to revive lost species — the passenger pigeon, the thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) and the woolly mammoth. Scientists disagree on whether we can truly bring a species back, and debate whether the technology should instead focus on "genetic rescue" — saving species that are only threatened.

  • A: The passenger pigeon died out in 1914 (last specimen at Cincinnati Zoo). Ben Novak leads a project to revive it by cloning its DNA into an embryo carried by the band-tailed pigeon.
  • B: In Australia, scientists want to revive the thylacine. Michael Archer says thylacines would have killed Tasmanian devils and stopped the spread of a deadly facial tumour among them.
  • C: Beth Shapiro doubts we can bring back a 100% identical species; a practical route is a hybrid using living DNA as a template that looks or acts like the extinct animal.
  • D: What is the point? Novak says a hybridised band-tailed pigeon with passenger-pigeon nesting habits (10,000 nests/hectare) could re-create the forest disturbance that many native species need.
  • E: The woolly mammoth: George Church's revival project studies cold resistance versus the Asian elephant. Adaptations (smaller ears, thicker hair, insulating fat) reduce heat loss; repopulating the tundra could even reduce carbon emissions.
  • F: It is easier to save a threatened species. Shapiro prefers "genetic rescue" — understanding why species died out to prevent future mass extinctions; she warns of the moral hazard of doing nothing.

Passage 3: Having a Laugh

What it's about: Psychologists study laughter as a rich source of information about human behaviour. Research shows a simple "haha" reveals whether people are friends or strangers, signals social status, and — perhaps surprisingly — that watching something funny makes people work harder and longer at boring, frustrating tasks. Humour, the researchers conclude, is not just enjoyable but energising.

  • Laughter is universal: Humans laugh from about six weeks old; laughter exists across all cultures and even in rats, chimps and bonobos, giving scientists rich material for studying psychology.
  • A social signal: Sound engineer Charley Douglass created "laugh tracks" in 1950 so home viewers felt part of a group — showing a simple laugh carries a lot of social information.
  • Friends or strangers: A 2016 UC Santa Cruz study played laughter to listeners from 24 societies; worldwide they guessed friends vs strangers correctly ~60% of the time.
  • Laughter & status: Christopher Oveis's San Diego study (48 fraternity students, teasing) found high-status people make dominant laughs; low-status people can raise their perceived status with a dominant laugh, while high-status people seem high-status either way.
  • Humour is energising: Cheng & Wang (ANU) showed people a funny (Mr Bean), relaxing or neutral video, then a boring, impossible task. Those who watched the funny clip persisted far longer — humour reduces anxiety and has a stimulating effect, contradicting the traditional view that humour distracts from work.
