Passage 1: Henry Moore (1898–1986)

What it's about: A biography of Henry Moore, one of Britain's most celebrated sculptors. It traces his path from a coal-mining town, through art college and the influence of ancient and non-European sculpture, to the reclining figures and mother-and-child forms that made him world famous — and shows how wartime and public commissions shaped his career.

Life Stages (জীবনের ধাপ অনুযায়ী ব্যাখ্যা)

  • Early life: Born 1898 in Castleford, a Yorkshire mining town. His teacher Alice Gostick encouraged his interest in art. He first trained and worked as a teacher before the war.
  • War & art college: He served in WWI (1917) and was injured, then used an ex-serviceman's grant to study at Leeds School of Art, and from 1921 at the Royal College of Art in London.
  • Influences: He spent hours at the British Museum studying ancient and non-Western art. A 1925 trip brought him to a cast of a Mayan (Chac Mool) reclining figure that shaped his signature reclining forms.
  • Controversy: A 1931 London exhibition drew hostile reviews and public calls for his resignation from the Royal College; he moved to teach at the Chelsea School of Art instead.
  • Wartime shift: During WWII a shortage of materials limited sculpture, so he concentrated on drawing — famous shelter drawings, and in 1942 drawings of coal miners in his home town.
  • Fame & income: A 1944 Harlow commission for a family group led him to bronze; bronze casts could be reproduced and sold to collectors worldwide, giving him a steady income and an international reputation.

Passage 2: The Desolenator — Producing Clean Water

What it's about: The Desolenator is a portable, solar-powered device invented by William Janssen that purifies almost any water — including seawater — without needing electricity, filters that must be replaced often, or fuel. The passage explains how it works, how it was funded, and how its inventor hopes it can help communities that lack clean water.

Passage 3: Why Fairy Tales Are Really Scary Tales

What it's about: Anthropologist Jamie Tehrani used methods borrowed from biology to trace how the tale of Little Red Riding Hood has evolved across 58 versions. Surprisingly, the "useful lessons" and moral warnings were not what kept the story alive — the frightening, gruesome details were the best preserved. Other scholars debate why scary stories endure.

  • A biological method: Tehrani applied phylogenetic analysis — the technique biologists use to build evolutionary "family trees" — to 58 versions of the tale, to see which elements are linked and which change.
  • What changes freely: Details of the plot — a girl or three siblings, a wolf or a tiger — vary a lot between cultures; incidents were no more stable than characters, and the middle of a story was not specially preserved.
  • The big surprise: The cautionary, "life-lesson" parts (survival warnings) were just as flexible as trivial details — so they are not what keeps the tale alive.
  • Fear survives best: The blood-thirsty, gruesome elements were the best preserved. Tehrani suggests a gripping, scary story survives even when told badly.
  • Debate: Jack Zipes thinks tales endure because they matter socially (e.g. women as victims); Tehrani counters that in Chinese, Japanese, Iranian and Nigerian versions the roles differ. Mathias Clasen argues scary stories let us safely rehearse fear.
