Passage 1: The Return of the Huarango

What it's about: On the desert coast of southern Peru, the native huarango tree — which has the longest roots of any tree in the world — was once vital to local people for food, fuel, medicine and shelter. Clearing it for farming turned land to desert. Botanists now run a project to restore the huarango forests and rebuild local pride in this "eco-heritage".

  • Why it survives: The south Peru coast is an extremely dry desert; the huarango survives because its roots reach 50–80 m down to water, which it also brings up to feed other plants.
  • Its value & its loss: Dr Beresford-Jones says the tree was key to the ancient diet and helped people survive droughts. But clearing native woodland causes erosion; once the huarangos go, the land becomes desert (as in the Lower Ica Valley).
  • Many uses: People grew vegetables under it, ate its seed pods, used leaves and bark for medicine, branches for fuel/charcoal, and the trunk to build houses — but forests are now cleared for large export farms.
  • The restoration project: Botanist Oliver Whaley (Kew) and Dr Milliken run a project to restore the habitat, overcoming a prejudice that planting food trees looks "poor". They started a huarango festival and helped schoolchildren plant thousands of trees.

Passage 2: Silbo Gomero — the Whistle "Language" of the Canary Islands

What it's about: On the mountainous island of La Gomera, people communicate over long distances with a whistled form of Spanish called Silbo. Brain-scan research shows Silbo activates the same language areas as speech, revealing how flexible the human brain is. Modern technology now threatens this rare skill, so locals are working to preserve it.

  • What Silbo is: A whistled substitute for Spanish, perfectly suited to La Gomera's steep terrain; words are recoded into high- and low-frequency whistles.
  • How it is made: A silbador puts a finger in the mouth to raise pitch and cups the other hand to steer the sound's direction; because whistles are ambiguous, they rely on repetition and context.
  • The brain study: Neuroimaging showed silbadores process Silbo in the left temporal lobe (used for speech); non-whistlers used many brain areas because they did not recognise it as language.
  • Origins & spread: Whistled languages existed before Spain's 15th-century conquest and survive in ~70 places worldwide, though only 12 are studied; they suit isolated mountain or forest communities.
  • Threat & protection: Modern phones threaten Silbo; since 1999 it is taught in the island's schools and locals seek a UNESCO award to preserve it for humanity.

Passage 3: Environmental Practices of Big Businesses

What it's about: An argument essay (by Jared Diamond) claiming that businesses damage the environment only when it is profitable and legal to do so. Rather than simply blaming companies, the writer says the public holds the ultimate power — through lawsuits, buying choices and pressure on governments — to make destructive practices unprofitable and sustainable ones pay.

  • The uncomfortable fact: A business can maximise short-term profit by harming the environment (e.g. unregulated fishing, corrupt logging). Clean firms win only when regulation is strong and the public cares.
  • Blaming is not enough: Companies are not charities; directors are legally bound to maximise profit (Ford was sued in 1919 for raising wages). Blaming alone won't create change.
  • The public's responsibility: Ultimately the public — directly or via politicians — can make destructive policies unprofitable and illegal, and sustainable ones profitable.
  • How the public can act: By suing polluters (Exxon Valdez), buying sustainable products, shaming poor performers, and pressing governments to award contracts and pass laws.
  • The pressure chain: Big business can pressure suppliers (the BSE/fast-food example) — so the public must target links sensitive to pressure (fast-food chains, not meat packers).
  • Conclusion: The writer finds it hopeful, not moralistic: public attitudes have changed businesses before and will again; people must accept slightly higher prices for clean practices.
