Passage 1: Why We Need to Protect Polar Bears

What it's about: Polar bears are threatened by climate change, but losing them would cost us more than a species. Their bodies hold medical secrets: a gene (APoB) that controls 'bad' cholesterol, and a bone-remodelling ability that keeps pregnant, fasting females strong. Beyond medicine, anecdotal evidence suggests bears are intelligent, creative problem-solvers with emotions — reasons enough to protect this majestic animal.

  • Adapted to the cold: Polar bears survive −40°C partly thanks to up to 11 cm of fat under the skin. Humans with that much adipose tissue would be obese and prone to diabetes and heart disease — yet the bear suffers no such consequences.
  • The APoB gene: Liu's 2014 study compared polar bears' genes with those of brown bears and found the APoB gene, which lowers LDLs ('bad' cholesterol). In humans, mutations of this gene raise heart-disease risk — so polar bears may be a study model for human heart disease.
  • Strong bones: Pregnant females fast for ~six months in maternity dens, yet their bones stay dense — unlike bedridden humans, who lose bone. Lennox & Goodship (2008) found the bears raise bone density before denning. Understanding this could help bedridden people and astronauts.
  • More than medicine: We protect animals we think are clever and emotional (elephants, primates) but see bears as stupid and violent. Anecdotes challenge this: GoGo at Tennoji Zoo used a branch as a tool to reach meat; a wild bear jumped on barrels to reach a photographer.
  • Creativity & emotion: Ames (2008) saw bears piling and knocking objects over like a game. Bears hit ice/snow in apparent frustration after a missed kill, and can form bonds with other species — one hand-raised bear, Agee, even swims with her owner. Losing them would mean losing an intelligent, majestic animal.

Passage 2: The Step Pyramid of Djoser

What it's about: The Step Pyramid at Saqqara was Egypt's first pyramid — designed for King Djoser by his official Imhotep, who stacked shrinking stone slabs to make a new kind of tomb. At 62 m it was the tallest structure of its time, set in a city-sized complex ringed by a wall, false doors and a trench. Robbers eventually broke in, but enough survived to make it a milestone in monumental architecture — an archetype later builders copied.

  • A: Pyramids are Egypt's most famous monuments. Their evolution has been argued about for centuries, but one thing is certain: it began with one monument, one king and one architect — the Step Pyramid of Djoser.
  • B: Djoser was the first king to build in stone. Before him, tombs were flat clay-brick monuments. Imhotep conceived a taller tomb by stacking shrinking stone slabs — a new burial-structure design.
  • C: Building went through many stages and much experimentation. The enormous weight was a challenge, so builders set the stones at an inward incline to stop it breaking up.
  • D: The finished pyramid rose 62 m — the tallest of its time. Its complex was the size of a city (16 hectares): temple, courtyards, shrines, priests' quarters, a 10.5 m wall with 13 false doors and one true entrance, all ringed by a trench.
  • E: The burial chamber lay beneath the pyramid in a maze of tunnels. Over 40,000 stone vessels, inscribed with earlier rulers' names, were found — scholars disagree on why.
  • F: Despite all the precautions, ancient robbers still got in and stole Djoser's goods and body. Yet enough remained to astonish the archaeologists who excavated it.
  • G: Verner calls it a milestone in monumental stone architecture — a revolutionary advance that became the archetype all later pyramid builders would follow. G:

Passage 3: The Future of Work

What it's about: Automation and AI will reshape work. Dr Stella Pachidi warns that the "algorithmication" of knowledge jobs can make workers over-reliant on the algorithm's view, losing intuition and the chance to learn from experts. But economists Hamish Low and Ewan McGaughey are more hopeful: job numbers may rise, careers will become multistage, and good social and legal policy can turn change into a fairer, more prosperous future.

  • The disruption: A consultancy says 3–14% of workers will switch occupations within 10–15 years; all must adapt to capable machines. Embodied AI (robots) and disembodied AI (algorithms in phones) both disrupt the labour market.
  • Algorithmication: Pachidi says the biggest change is the "algorithmication" of data-based knowledge jobs. Algorithms learn from data to read contracts, analyse scans, gather intelligence — often outperforming humans, cutting costs and boosting productivity.
  • The hidden costs: If routine cognitive tasks go to AI, how do novices become experts? "Legitimate peripheral participation" (learning by watching experts) breaks down. At a telecoms firm, an algorithm decided which customers to contact; workers began learning through the "algorithm's eyes", discouraging experimentation and intuition — and some fed it false data to hit targets.
  • The optimists: Hamish Low sees a multistage working life with retraining and periods of no job by choice. He calls "fixed number of jobs" a fallacy — the number will grow. Ewan McGaughey blames unemployment on laws restricting capital, not new technology; social policy (retraining, redeployment) can handle change.
  • A social revolution: McGaughey urges governments to seize the moment and guarantee full employment and fair incomes. Like the industrial and corporate revolutions, a third revolution is coming — but it will be social, not just technological.
