Passage 1: The White Horse of Uffington

What it's about: England has cut huge figures ("geoglyphs") into chalk hillsides for over 3,000 years — 56 survive, mostly in the south. The most famous is the Uffington White Horse in Oxfordshire, a stylised figure near the ancient Ridgeway track. OSL dating of the surrounding soil places it in the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age. Theories about why it was made range from a tribal land-marker to the horse goddess Epona or the Welsh goddess Rhiannon.

  • Geoglyphs in England: 56 hill figures survive, mostly on chalk downlands in the south. Most are only 300 years old, but a few are far older.
  • The most mysterious: the Uffington White Horse was recently re-dated as older than its assumed Iron Age date. The Long Man of Wilmington remains controversial — prehistoric, or a medieval monk's work?
  • Method & survival: figures were made by removing grass to reveal white chalk. Grass regrows unless a team regularly scours it; when traditions faded, most figures vanished. Re-cutting slightly off-line altered shapes over centuries.
  • The horse itself: a sleek, stylised figure 2.5 km from Uffington, near the Ridgeway and Bronze Age burial mounds; best seen from the air, visible up to 30 km away.
  • Dating: first written reference in 1070s documents; thought Iron Age from coin similarity, but 1995 OSL testing of soil gave a Late Bronze/Early Iron Age date.
  • Why it was made: a tribal emblem marking land; part of a ritual; the goddess Epona (protector of horses, linked to fertility); or Rhiannon in Welsh mythology. Geoglyphs may have been temporary gestures, yet remain a window into their creators' minds.

Passage 2: I Contain Multitudes

What it's about: Wendy Moore reviews Ed Yong's book about microbes. Microbes are everywhere and will outlive us; each person's "microbiome" holds about 39 trillion cells — more than our own 30 trillion. Yong argues for microbial tolerance: only a few cause disease, most keep us healthy, and our relationship with them is symbiotic. Our obsession with hygiene, overuse of antibiotics and poor diets are upsetting this balance.

  • Ubiquitous microbes: mostly bacteria, they populated Earth long before animals and will outlive us; they live in soil, air, rocks, water and every form of life.
  • The microbiome: each species has its own colony; humans have ~39 trillion microbial cells vs ~30 trillion human — we are only 50% human. Some call each of us a "holobiont".
  • Constantly changing: microbes live in specific body parts, usually peacefully; 'bad' microbes are just microbes out of context; we constantly swap microbes with people, pets and food.
  • Yong as guide: a young British journalist who explains complex science with lightness and panache, on a mission to make us love microbes. Yong
  • Discovery: van Leeuwenhoek first saw "animalcules" in the 1670s with his own microscopes; ~200 years later Pasteur's germ theory gave bacteria their bad image. van Leeuwenhoek
  • A plea for tolerance: few species cause disease; thousands keep us healthy; the relationship is symbiotic. New research shows microbes aid digestion, immunity, vitamins and may fight obesity — but hygiene obsession, antibiotics and low-fibre diets disrupt the balance.
  • A world of wonder: unglamorous case studies (frog fungus, luminescent squid) reward the reader; future uses include microbe-filled hospital walls to protect babies.

Passage 3: How to Make Wise Decisions

What it's about: Wisdom is not a rare trait held by a few sages — research by Professor Igor Grossmann shows most of us can reason wisely given the right context. Wise reasoning has four features (intellectual humility, wider perspectives, sensitivity to change, and compromise). The most reliable way to boost it is to view a problem from a third-party, "distant observer" perspective — "ego-decentering" — which experiments with graduates and couples support.

  • Wisdom is not rare: empirical research suggests most of us can make wise decisions given the right context — not just a few bearded philosophers.
  • Context matters: Grossmann says experiential, situational and cultural factors shape wisdom more than thought. Wisdom is not just an "inner quality" but unfolds with the situation.
  • Four features: intellectual humility (knowing our limits), appreciating wider perspectives, sensitivity to change in relations, and compromise/integration of views.
  • Third-party view: looking at scenarios as if advising a friend fosters wiser thinking, because a first-person view narrows focus while an observer view broadens it toward justice and impartiality.
  • Experiments: graduating students told to imagine their careers "as a distant observer" showed more wisdom; couples visualising a conflict "through an outsider's eyes" relied more on wise reasoning. This "ego-decentering" enables a bigger-picture view.
  • Not just intelligence: only a small link exists between wisdom and intelligence or personality traits; how wisely someone behaves varies greatly from one situation to the next.
