Passage 1: Roman Shipbuilding and Navigation

What it's about: The land-based Romans learned shipbuilding from the Greeks and Egyptians. They first built the outer hull, then shifted to a faster "frame-first" method. Warships were light and speedy, with a bronze battering ram and rowers on three levels; merchant ships had deep V-shaped hulls, square and triangular sails, and used music to coordinate their oarsmen. Navigation relied not on instruments but on landmarks, the sun and stars, and local knowledge.

  • Learning the craft: Roman shipbuilding was an art of estimation and inherited technique. The Romans were land people who learned from the Greeks and Egyptians they conquered.
  • Two methods: at first they built the outer hull, sewing planks then fixing them with mortise and tenon. Later Mediterranean builders switched to building the frame first — faster and more systematic. Their large ships were unequalled until the 16th century.
  • Warships: light and fast, with a long narrow hull, no ballast, a bronze battering ram, and both sail and oar power. Rome's navy dominated the Mediterranean — "Mare Nostrum".
  • The trireme: the dominant warship (7th–4th c. BCE), with rowers on three levels (~50 per bank). Rowers were mostly Roman citizens in the military, not slaves.
  • Merchant ships: a wider, double-planked, deep V-shaped hull; huge side rudders; square sails plus a small triangular sail; music kept the many rowers in time.
  • Cargo & ports: raw materials and grain (from Egypt's Nile) supplied Rome (~1 million people) through Pozzuoli and Ostia; towboats dragged large ships to the quay.
  • Navigation: no compass — seamen used visible landmarks, the pole star, the noon sun, and the wind and swell. Overall, Roman shipping resembled shipping today.

Passage 2: Ancient Artefacts in Norway's Glaciers

What it's about: As climate change melts Norway's high mountain ice, ancient artefacts frozen for up to 6,000 years are emerging. A nine-year study in Oppland recovered over 2,000 objects — arrows, bows, skis, tools. Radiocarbon dating of 153 finds surprisingly showed hunters kept venturing into the mountains even in cold periods, when failing harvests made hunting more important. Many finds date to the Viking Age, showing goods travelled overland, not just by ship.

  • A: shrinking ice above the treeline is giving up 6,000-year-old treasures — arrows and Viking-Age skis — offering insights into how ancient Norwegians lived.
  • B: organic materials rarely survive unless protected from decay-causing microorganisms; extreme cold preserves them, but once exposed they degrade fast, so archaeologists must race the clock.
  • C: Pilø and Barrett surveyed Oppland's ice over nine years. Reindeer once gathered on the ice in summer to escape insects; hunters followed, and trade routes crossed the passes. Fieldwork is hard — hiking, camping on permafrost — but rewarding.
  • D: over 2,000 artefacts (4,000 BCE–14th c.) were found. Many relate to hunting — misplaced arrows, discarded broken bows — plus tools, skis and horse tack.
  • E & F: 153 finds were radiocarbon-dated against climate and social shifts. Surprisingly, hunters kept venturing up even in extreme cold (e.g. the 536–600 CE Little Ice Age) — perhaps because failing harvests made mountain hunting more important.
  • G: many finds date to the Viking Age (700s–900s CE). Trade networks were expanding; goods travelled overland through Oppland's passes, and demand grew for hides and antlers.
  • H: a gap of finds (3,800–2,200 BCE) may mean artefacts disintegrated or are still frozen — so more may emerge from retreating ice. H:

Passage 3: The Plant 'Thermometer'

What it's about: A Cambridge-led team found that phytochromes — molecules plants use to sense light by day — also act as thermometers at night. In darkness they slowly switch off ("dark reversion") at a rate set by temperature: warmth speeds it up, releasing genes for growth. The discovery, published in Science and worked out in the mustard plant Arabidopsis, could help breed crops resilient to climate change and explains the old rhyme about oak and ash trees.

  • A: phytochromes, used to detect light by day, change function in darkness to act as temperature gauges, controlling genetic switches. Published in Science.
  • B: at night the molecules change state at a rate directly proportional to temperature — the warmer it is, the faster the change, stimulating growth. B:
  • C: people have long known warm winters make trees bud early and used this to predict weather and harvests; now a molecular mechanism explains it. C:
  • D: Dr Wigge says the discovery could help breed tougher crops — yields must double by 2050, but heat harms wheat and rice (~10% loss per degree). D:
  • E & F: by day, light activates phytochromes (slowing growth); in shade they inactivate fast so the plant grows to find light. At night, "dark reversion" is slow in cold (more growth-suppressing time) and fast in warmth (growth resumes).
  • G: the dual role explains the rhyme "oak before ash… splash; ash before oak… soak": oaks use temperature (phytochromes), ash uses day length. G:
  • H: twelve years of work with Germany, Argentina and the US, done in Arabidopsis mustard; the genes exist in crops too, and can now be identified and altered.
