Passage 1: Roman Tunnels

What it's about: The Romans adopted others' techniques to build tunnels. The Persian qanat method used posts on a hill to keep a line, and vertical shafts (for removing earth and ventilation) leading water to a canal. A second, counter-excavation method dug from both ends and needed advanced surveying. Tunnels served water supply, roads and mining; hard rock was cracked by "fire quenching". Inscriptions often named the patron and sometimes the architect.

  • The qanat method: the Persians placed posts over a hill in a straight line to keep the route, then dug vertical shafts at intervals. Workers removed earth between the shafts; the shafts also gave ventilation, and water flowed down to a canal for human use. qanat:
  • Roman qanats: the Romans used the method for agriculture, with shafts 30–60 m apart, fitted with handholds/footholds and a wood or stone lid. A plumb line kept shafts vertical. The 5.6 km Claudius tunnel (41 CE) took 11 years and ~30,000 workers.
  • Counter-excavation: from the 6th c. BCE, tunnels were dug from both ends through mountains, needing advanced surveying. The Saldae aqueduct teams missed each other; a lateral link fixed the error, recorded in an inscription on the tunnel. counter-excavation:
  • Roads & mining: tunnels bypassed hills too high for roads (e.g. the Furlo Pass tunnel). Others mined minerals — gold at the Dolaucothi mines in Wales; mining tunnels needed less planning as the vein set the route.
  • Planning & time: qanats were faster (dug from many shafts). Hard rock was cracked by "fire quenching" (heat then cold water). Progress could be 30 cm/day in solid rock vs 1.4 m/day for Claudius. Inscriptions named patrons and sometimes the architect — e.g. the 1.4 km Çevlik tunnel in Turkey, built to protect Seleuceia Pieria's harbour.

Passage 2: Changes in Reading Habits

What it's about: The author (a reading researcher) argues that digital reading is quietly rewiring the brain's reading circuit. "Deep reading" skills — critical analysis, empathy, insight — may be under threat as we skim and word-spot. Studies show print readers understand and sequence stories better than screen readers, and the "new norm" is skimming. Yet the brain adapts, so — if we act — there is reason for excitement as well as caution.

  • A hidden change: everywhere people read on screens; unnoticed, the neuronal reading circuit is subtly, rapidly changing — with implications for everyone.
  • Deep reading at risk: literacy created a new brain circuit ~6,000 years ago that supports critical analysis, empathy and insight; these "deep reading" processes may be threatened by digital modes.
  • Not just print vs digital: Turkle warns we err not when we innovate but when we ignore what we diminish; society must confront what is fading. Turkle:
  • The circuit adapts: reading is not genetic; it adapts to its medium. A fast, multitasking digital medium shifts attention away from slow, deep reading.
  • Evidence: college students avoid dense classics; Mangen's study found print readers understood and sequenced a story better than screen readers; Liu found skimming is the "new norm".
  • Wider costs: losing critical analysis and empathy affects everyone equally, leaving us open to false information — but "use it or lose it" gives hope, since we can identify and redress the changes. খরচ সবার; তবে "use it or lose it" — আশা আছে।

Passage 3: Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence

What it's about: AI already forecasts better than humans, yet people distrust it. The IBM "Watson for Oncology" case shows doctors rejecting AI advice they can't understand. We trust people because we grasp how they think; AI feels unfamiliar and its decisions are hard to comprehend, causing anxiety. Sci-fi films polarise attitudes (confirmation bias). Solutions: give people experience of AI, make algorithms more transparent, and let users modify them.

  • A: AI already predicts crime, health risks and more — almost always better than humans — yet people lack confidence in it and prefer human experts, even when the experts are wrong.
  • B: IBM's "Watson for Oncology" was a PR disaster: when it agreed with doctors it added nothing; when it disagreed they judged it incompetent and it couldn't explain itself — deepening distrust.
  • C: we trust people by understanding how they think and knowing their reliability; AI is new, its decision-making too complex to grasp, and unfamiliarity causes anxiety and a loss of control. Media over-report AI failures.
  • D: in an experiment, sci-fi films (positive or negative) polarised attitudes — optimists more enthusiastic, sceptics more guarded — showing "confirmation bias". Rejecting AI's benefits could disadvantage a large group.
  • E: solutions: previous experience with AI improves opinions; transparency reports about algorithms would help people understand AI decisions. E:
  • F: giving people some control over AI decisions also builds trust — those allowed to modify an algorithm felt more satisfied and more likely to use it. F:
