Passage 1: The Development of the London Underground Railway
What it's about: In the 1800s London's population and traffic grew so fast that crossing the congested City became a nightmare. Solicitor Charles Pearson pushed for an underground railway. The Metropolitan line (1863) became the world's first underground railway, built by the cheap "cut and cover" method. Later, deep-level electric lines like the City & South London (1890) and the Central London "Tuppenny Tube" (1900) shaped today's Underground.
- The problem: London's population grew at an astonishing rate; overground railways were banned from entering the City (1846), so their stations formed a ring around it. The area inside was full of slums and horse-drawn traffic — crossing 8 km could take 1.5 hours.
- Pearson's idea: Charles Pearson, a City solicitor, saw social and economic gains in an underground line that would link stations and clear slums by moving poor workers to new suburbs. His 1851 plan was rejected but coincided with another that Parliament passed.
- The company: Two groups merged into the Metropolitan Railway Company (1854), planning a ~5 km line from Paddington to Farringdon. Funding was hard to raise; the press printed critical articles and objectors feared collapsing tunnels and poisonous engine fumes.
- The construction: The GWR invested ~£250,000; £1m was raised over five years. The route ran below existing main roads to avoid demolishing buildings. "Cut and cover" was used: a trench (10 m wide, 6 m deep), brick walls and arch, then a 2 m layer of soil on top.
- Opening: The Metropolitan opened 10 Jan 1863 — the world's first underground railway. About 40,000 travelled on day one; 9.5 million journeys were made in the first year.
- Steam & smoke: Extensions reached Moorgate and Hammersmith. Special locomotives condensed steam in water tanks, but smoke and fumes stayed a problem despite ventilation shafts.
- Deeper tunnels needed: By the 1880s congestion was worse; the loop did not cross the centre, and "cut and cover" was impossible there — deep tunnels were the only option.
- Electric lines: Steam could not run in confined tunnels, so a reliable electric motor was needed. The City & South London (1890) became the first deep-level electric railway — narrow carriages, tiny windows, unreliable power, no profit. The Central London "Tuppenny Tube" (1900) was very popular, and by 1907 today's Underground was largely in place.

Passage 2: Stadiums — Past, Present and Future
What it's about: Stadiums are among the oldest urban buildings. Today they are viewed with scepticism (huge costs, disuse after big events), but history shows they can adapt and drive city life. Roman amphitheatres (Arles, Verona, Lucca) served many uses over the centuries. Modern architects now design stadiums as "urban hubs" (mixed-use spaces) and as "power plants" (solar panels and wind turbines).
- A: Stadiums are ancient, but today face scepticism — costs can top £1bn and Olympic/World Cup venues often fall into disuse. Yet history shows they can drive urban development.
- B: The Arles amphitheatre (SW France, 25,000) shows versatility: Roman arena → fortress → village of 200+ houses → back to an arena for bullfights. Verona's arena (30,000) is now a top opera venue thanks to its acoustics.
- C: Lucca's amphitheatre was absorbed into the city — filled with houses, a salt depot and a prison, then turned into a market square by Lorenzo Nottolini; the ruins remain in the surrounding shops.
- D: Modern stadiums lost some flexibility in the early 20th century (steel, reinforced concrete, floodlights). Many sit in suburbs surrounded by parking — less accessible, more energy-hungry, adding to urban heat.
- E: Innovative architects now design the stadium as an urban hub — with hotels, shops, restaurants, playgrounds and green space — opening it to families. UK models: Wembley and Old Trafford. Wembley, Old Trafford।
- F: The stadium as a power plant: its large canopy suits solar panels and its height suits wind turbines. Kaohsiung Stadium (2009) has 8,844 panels producing 1.14 GWh a year, cutting CO₂ by 660 tons and supplying up to 80% of the local area when idle.
- G: Sporting arenas have always been central to cities, gaining new value in every era — fortress, village, theatre, and now advanced engineering — helping create a sustainable future.

Passage 3: To Catch a King
What it's about: Anna Keay reviews Charles Spencer's book To Catch a King, the story of the six-week manhunt for Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester (1651). The review praises the book's closeness to the action and its even-handed sympathy, while noting one weakness — it does not fully address whether the six weeks left a lasting mark on the king.
- P1 — the background: After his father's execution (1649), the young Charles II accepted Presbyterianism to be crowned King of Scots. This triggered an English invasion of Scotland and a Scottish invasion of England, ending in his defeat at Worcester and a national manhunt with a huge reward.
- P2 — Pepys: Years later, the restored 50-year-old king told his story in detail to diarist Samuel Pepys over two long sittings, so this extraordinary episode would never be forgotten.
- P3 — the joy of the book: The day-by-day retelling brings vivid details — cutting his hair with shears, walnut-dyed skin, hiding on an oak branch in Boscobel Wood — capturing both humour and tension.
- P4 — an uncomfortable truth: Most English had bolted their doors against Charles because he led a foreign (Scots) army and people feared renewed war. Yet Charles himself loved the story and celebrated it — new knighthoods, huge paintings, a painted ceiling — remarkable for marking his lowest point.
- P5 — the author: Spencer is the perfect person to retell it — pacey, readable prose free of modern idioms, with even-handed sympathy for both the fugitive king and the republican regime.
- P6 — the one weakness: The tantalising unanswered question is what it all meant — whether the six weeks changed him. The book's picture of his later years doesn't do justice to his character, but this niggle aside it is an excellent read.
