Passage 1: The Dead Sea Scrolls
What it's about: In 1946/7, Bedouin shepherds near Qumran found ancient scrolls in clay jars in a cave. Thousands of fragments (800–900 manuscripts) were later unearthed. Written 150 BCE–70 CE, probably by the Essenes, they include parts of nearly every Old Testament book. The passage covers their languages, the unusual Copper Scroll, and the scrolls' later "journeys" — including a 2017 University of Haifa decoding.
- Discovery: Three Bedouin teenagers near Qumran heard a shattering sound after throwing a rock into a cliff opening; they found clay jars, seven holding scrolls, sold cheaply to a dealer. Later, tens of thousands of fragments came from 10 caves.
- Origin: Written between 150 BCE and 70 CE. The prevailing theory links them to a devout Jewish sect, the Essenes, who lived in Judea until the Romans destroyed the settlement ~70 CE.
- Languages: Mostly Hebrew (some in a very old alphabet), some Aramaic, and several Greek translations of the Hebrew Bible.
- Content: Fragments from every Old Testament book except Esther. The only complete book is Isaiah — the earliest surviving biblical manuscript. Also sectarian rules and non-biblical writings.
- Writing & the Copper Scroll: Mostly black/red ink on parchment or papyrus. The exception (3Q15) is copper — a "treasure map" listing 64 hiding places of gold and silver; none have been found.
- Journeys: In 1948 archbishop Mar Samuel bought four scrolls for under $100, offered them unsuccessfully to US universities, then advertised in the Wall Street Journal (1954). Yigael Yadin bought and returned them to Jerusalem.
- 2017 decoding: Haifa researchers spent a year reassembling 60 fragments, revealing a 364-day calendar and details of two yearly religious events. Only one known scroll remains untranslated.

Passage 2: A Second Attempt at Domesticating the Tomato
What it's about: Domesticating the wild tomato once took 3,000 years; now teams in Brazil and China have re-done it in under three years using CRISPR gene editing — creating more nutritious, disease-resistant tomatoes. A US team is domesticating the groundcherry. The passage weighs the promise (healthier crops that could survive climate change) against the limits (cost, and getting people to accept new foods).
- A: CRISPR "fast-track" domestication re-created a better tomato in under three years, and could turn many wild plants into useful, disease-resistant foods. Kudla notes 90% of our energy comes from just 15 crops.
- B: Wild Andean tomatoes are pea-sized. Selective breeding gave bigger fruit but lost genetic diversity and flavour. The teams reintroduced traits "from scratch" while keeping wild strengths.
- C: Kudla's team made six edits — tripling fruit size and boosting lycopene five-fold. China's team created a strain resistant to bacterial spot and one that is salt-tolerant and rich in vitamin C. C:
- D: Van Eck's team is domesticating the groundcherry — bigger fruit, more compact growth, less dropping — but further work is expensive due to the CRISPR licence and regulatory approval.
- E: Jones thinks it will be hard for new foods to become staple crops. Teams eye drought/heat-tolerant plants (foxtail, oat-grass, cowpea) for a warming world; Kudla won't reveal his targets.

Passage 3: Insight or Evolution?
What it's about: Two scientists argue against the popular idea that discovery comes from the sudden genius of stars like Darwin and Einstein. Instead, innovation is an evolutionary process of trial and error — random "mutations" of ideas, kept if useful (Nicholson→Bohr, the acey-deucy stirrup, the Post-It note). They propose Thorndike's "Law of Effect" as a better, mechanical explanation than "genius".
- P1–2: People believe discovery comes from lone genius and sudden insight. The writers say this misrepresents reality: innovation is trial and error, a cumulative, evolutionary process.
- P3: John Nicholson was wrong about "proto-elements", yet his atomic idea gave Niels Bohr the basis for his famous model — an unheralded scientist who laid a foundation.
- P4: Science evolves like living species: random "mutations" of ideas survive if beneficial.
- P5: The acey-deucy stirrup came from a jockey's leg injury, not clever design; it happened to help on turns and spread fast. P5: acey-deucy stirrup
- P6: The Post-It note came from serendipity — a weak glue plus a bookmark problem. Advances arise from error and luck, not just genius.
- P7–8: "Genius" merely labels rather than explains. Thorndike's Law of Effect (1898) — organisms repeat successful behaviours — offers a mechanical explanation like Natural Selection, with no end goal.
- P9: More study is needed; new ideas may not be entirely random but constrained by past successes and failures. Time to abandon "genius" and study creativity scientifically.
