Passage 1: The Thylacine
What it's about: The extinct thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, was a striped, dog-like marsupial. The passage describes its appearance, hunting (by scent, exhausting its prey), breeding in a pouch, and its decline — hunted by farmers and bounty hunters, harmed by disease, habitat and prey loss. Protected only in 1936, the last one died that year; it was declared extinct in 1986.
- Appearance: A marsupial resembling a dog, with 13–19 dark stripes over its back and tail; males averaged 162.6 cm nose-to-tail, females 153.7 cm.
- Behaviour: Exclusively carnivorous with a stretchy stomach; a slow runner that caught prey by exhausting it, relying on scent. Shy and mostly nocturnal, though sometimes seen basking by day.
- Breeding: Newborns were tiny and hairless; they crawled into the pouch and attached to a teat for up to three months, then stayed in a lair while the mother hunted.
- Range: Once widespread across New Guinea, mainland Australia and Tasmania. The last mainland fossil is ~3,100 years old; its extinction there coincided with the arrival of dingoes, which never reached Tasmania.
- Decline: The Tasmanian decline (from the 1830s) is blamed mainly on sheep farmers and bounty hunters, but wild dogs, habitat/prey loss and disease also contributed.
- Extinction: Only one successful captive breeding (1899). Little concern except T.T. Flynn. Protection came only in 1929 (December only) and fully in July 1936 — 59 days before the last one died. Declared extinct in 1986.

Passage 2: Palm Oil
What it's about: Palm oil is the world's most-used vegetable oil, valued for staying solid and preserving food. Its rapid spread causes deforestation and threatens species like the Sumatran orangutan. But the story is "nuanced": palm oil lifts people out of poverty, gives very high yields per hectare, and can be certified sustainable by the RSPO. New research on the bird's nest fern even offers hope of restoring biodiversity in plantations.
- A: Palm oil is the most consumed vegetable oil — in soap, sandwiches and biscuits — valued because it stays solid at room temperature, aiding long "best before" dates.
- B: Production has soared — from 2 to 60 million tonnes a year — and land use grew from 6 to 17 million hectares (1990–2012). B:
- C: Its spread causes deforestation and threatens endangered species — the Sumatran orangutan, rhinos, elephants, tigers. C:
- D: Ellwood calls it a threat to biodiversity, but Shankar argues a more "nuanced" story is closer to the truth.
- E: Palm oil also lifts millions out of poverty, so a total boycott is a serious dilemma. E:
- F: It yields 4–10 times more oil per hectare than rivals, so less land is cleared; carbon impact depends on what it replaces. F:
- G: The RSPO sets sustainability standards (no virgin-forest clearing, transparency, carbon checks) and certifies ~21% of world production. G: RSPO
- H: Reintroducing the bird's nest fern (a keystone epiphyte) could help plantations recover their biodiversity. H: bird's nest fern

Passage 3: Building the Skyline — Manhattan's Skyscrapers
What it's about: Katharine Shester reviews Jason Barr's book, which uses geology, history and economics to explain how New York's skyline developed. The book has two parts — historical (1609–1900) and a more technical 20th-century economic analysis. Shester praises its breadth and the chapter debunking the "bedrock myth", while noting some chapters are too specialised for general readers.
- P1 — the book: Barr combines many fields and lots of data to explain why business clusters formed and how early decisions shaped the skyline; the book has two distinct parts, and the tone shifts in the second.
- P2 — early chapters: A "helicopter time-machine" view of 1609, an underground tour, and fun facts. Chapters 2–3 (up to the Civil War) are well researched. Shester questions the tenement/slum-clearance claim.
- P3 — Ch 4: Immigrant enclaves sat on the least valuable land, between waterfront industries and wealthy areas near Central Park. P3:
- P4 — Ch 5–6: The economics of height (engineering, economic, developer height) and technology (steel frames). Chapter 6's regression analysis is more technical than a general reader would like.
- P5 — Ch 7 (the highlight): The "bedrock myth" — Barr shows deep bedrock raises foundation costs but not prohibitively; the caisson discussion is a relatively easy, enjoyable read.
- P6 — Ch 8–10: Midtown and the 1920s boom (supply/demand, not cheap credit). The final chapter's land-value research is particularly impressive; the book ends with an epilogue on climate change.
