Passage 1: Stonehenge

What it's about: Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument in southern England, took about 1,500 years to build in several stages. The passage covers the three construction phases, competing theories about how the bluestones were moved, who the builders were, and its possible purposes (burial ground, calendar, place of healing).

  • Stage 1: ~5,000 years ago, Neolithic Britons dug a circular ditch and bank (henge) using primitive tools, possibly deer antlers. Deep pits may have held a ring of timber posts.
  • Stage 2 & the bluestones: ~80 bluestones (43 remain) from the Preseli Hills in Wales (~300 km away) were raised. Theories: builders used tree trunks for sledges/rollers, or oxen pulled them on baskets; geologists suggest glaciers carried them.
  • Stage 3: ~2000 BCE, sandstone "sarsens" were set into an outer ring and iconic three-piece "trilithons" in the centre. Work continued to ~1600 BCE.
  • The builders: Aubrey claimed druids built it; radiocarbon dating showed it stood 1,000+ years before the Celts. Several tribes likely each did a phase.
  • Purpose: Most agree it was a burial ground. Hawkins (1960s) suggested a calendar for solstices/eclipses (critics doubt it); recent finds of illness suggest a place of healing.

Passage 2: Living with Artificial Intelligence

What it's about: As AI grows towards "artificial general intelligence", we must make machines "human-friendly" — aligned with our values. But humans are not reliably good ourselves, so this is hard. The writer explores the "getting started" and "destination" problems: how to guide AI, and whether letting AI police our morals costs us our autonomy.

  • Para 1: AI has achieved astonishing feats (e.g. a chess AI that self-taught in four hours). Today's is "narrow AI", but experts think artificial general intelligence (AGI) may arrive by mid-century.
  • Para 2: Machines lack the physical limits of human brains (slow, small), so they could go far beyond us.
  • Para 3 (King Midas): The more powerful AI is, the more carefully we must specify its goals — like Midas, who asked for the wrong thing.
  • Para 4: We must make AI "human-friendly", but we are far from reliably friendly ourselves — the challenge is deciding which values AI should share.
  • Para 5–6: AI should be ethically superhuman. Two problems: "getting started" (telling it what to seek) and "destination" (losing our autonomy to moral gatekeepers). Human flaws make building good machines harder.
  • Later paras: "Silicon police" might limit our options unnoticed. AI already helps allocate NHS resources; if given more power it needs correctly specified, fair goals. Safety may require giving AI both intelligence and moral authority.

Passage 3: An Ideal City

What it's about: Leonardo da Vinci's "ideal city", designed around 1486 after a plague in Milan, was centuries ahead of its time. He planned a multi-level city on the Ticino River with services below and elegant walkways above, artificial canals, and streets matched to house height. His ideas were only applied in the 19th–20th centuries (e.g. Haussmann's Paris).

  • Genius & context: Da Vinci embodied science, art and humanism. The Renaissance followed the 14th-century plague; today's climate crisis is a similar turning point needing radical solutions.
  • The ideal city project: After a Milan plague (~1486) he turned to urban planning; the project was never built due to cost. The 15th century saw urbanism born as a discipline (Pienza, Ferrara).
  • The design: A city on the Ticino River for easy transport and clean spaces, with high walls and towers. Built on several levels linked by outdoor staircases — implemented only in the 1920s–30s Modernist movement.
  • Engineering & canals: Upper layers for people, lower for services/industry. His originality was fusing architecture and engineering — artificial canals for boats. Streets matched house height (for sun, earthquake safety), a rule still used in Italy.
  • Legacy: His multi-level idea appeared in Haussmann's 19th-century Paris. Today the compact, upward, nature-integrated city suggests a way forward for sustainable planning.
