Passage 1: Materials to Take Us Beyond Concrete
What it's about: Concrete is the second most-used substance after water, but making cement produces huge CO₂. Because concrete is so useful, replacing it is hard. The passage (sections A–H) explores alternatives — treated wood (cross-laminated timber), fly ash and iron-ore slag — and the obstacles they still face.
- A: Concrete is second only to water in use and a huge source of greenhouse gases (from making cement); a growing population needs housing, so emissions could soar.
- B: Prof Cheeseman: concrete is high-carbon only because of the scale on which it is used — cement is high-carbon, concrete is not.
- C: Concrete's ingredients are cheap and abundant; Portland cement is mouldable then sets hard, and steel reinforces it (similar thermal expansion) — hard to beat.
- D: Wood is a possible alternative; tall wooden buildings now exist in Vancouver, Vienna and Brumunddal (Norway).
- E: Wood absorbs moisture and swells, and risks pests/fire — but cross-laminated timber (glued layers) is as strong as concrete/steel, lighter, faster and quieter to build.
- F: Mannström (Stora Enso): demand for timber is rising globally with climate concerns; wood also locks away carbon — but its limits mean more projects must be proven first.
- G: Fly ash (from coal plants) and iron-ore slag can replace 15–30% of cement without weakening it. But Surgenor warns transport over long distances may cancel the carbon saving.
- H: Preston & Lehne: novel cements have been discussed for a decade without breaking through — rarely cost-effective, with raw-material shortages and customer resistance.

Passage 2: The Steam Car
What it's about: The story of the Doble brothers and their steam cars. Early steam cars were slow to start; the internal combustion engine soon replaced them. The Dobles improved steam cars (Models B, C, E) — fast, quiet, clean — but they were too expensive and constantly re-designed, so the company folded. This passage uses Matching Headings.
- A: Early steam cars inherited steam's strengths and weaknesses — quick transport, but boilers took ~20 minutes to build pressure and water lasted only ~30 miles.
- B: The internal combustion engine let you drive at once; the 1912 electric starter phased steam out. B:
- C: The Doble brothers built cars from a wrecked steam car; their Model B was near-silent and very fast (0–60 mph in 15 s) — praised by magazines.
- D: Abner sought investment, opened a company and built the Model C with key ignition; 5,390 deposits were taken for the Doble Detroit.
- E: The finished cars disappointed buyers — sluggish, erratic, sometimes reversing when they should go forward. E:
- F: The Model E was road-tested after a freezing night in New York — it lit in 40 seconds, handled well despite its weight, reached 100+ mph with low emissions.
- G: It was never a financial success (~$18,000; endlessly tinkered with; under 50 built). Yet surviving Model Es still run and pass California emissions — the steam car may rise again.

Passage 3: The Case for Mixed-Ability Classes
What it's about: A teacher argues against "streaming" (splitting students by ability) and for mixed-ability classes. He uses Vygotsky's ideas (the "zone of proximal development" and the "more knowledgeable other"), cites John Hattie's research showing streaming barely helps and harms weaker students, and defends peer learning. He ends with a class hike where students help each other.
- The lesson & the hike: A Romeo and Juliet lesson shows a teacher meeting very different needs at once. Critics compare mixed-ability teaching to a group hike where fast walkers wait and slow ones struggle.
- Constructivism & ZPD: Vygotsky's "zone of proximal development" is the gap between what a student can do with help and alone; teaching provides then removes "scaffolding". This seems to favour streaming.
- Streaming's appeal & evidence: Streaming is intuitively appealing but Hattie found it "has minimal effects" and harms those in the lowest sets (often poorer students). The smart stay smart, the divide widens.
- Teacher expectations: A key factor is the teacher's estimate of achievement; streaming lowers it for weaker groups, mixed classes keep it flexible.
- The MKO & peer learning: The "more knowledgeable other" can be a peer; students explain ideas freshly to classmates in ways teachers cannot. Mixed classes help the many flourish — the writer ends with a shared hike.
