Passage 1: Green Roofs

What it's about: Rooftops covered with plants are spreading in cities worldwide. The passage (paragraphs A–E) explains their benefits (saving energy, reducing floods, wildlife habitats, growing food, better mental health), how the UK and North America promote them, the challenges of installing them, and new variations — "blue roofs", "brown roofs" and solar combinations.

  • A: Green roofs bring many benefits — saving energy, reducing flood risk, wildlife habitats, tackling pollution, growing food. City authorities matter; London's forward-thinking policies more than doubled its green-roof area.
  • B: They integrate with "living walls" and drainage. Doctors prescribe gardening for anxiety/depression, and green space helps dementia and prevents obesity.
  • C: In North America green roofs are mainstream (San Francisco requires them; Toronto has 1990s policies). Newer buildings help — they hold more weight and water, so a wider variety of plants (deeper soil).
  • D: They need support from authorities and investors; challenges include new skills, drainage, safety, access and disruption. "Natural capital" explains their economic value.
  • E: Official standards now exist. New variations: "blue roofs" (hold water longer), solar combinations, and "brown roofs" (wilder, more biodiversity). Success stories should be replicated worldwide.

Passage 2: The Growth Mindset

What it's about: The idea that intelligence can be developed, not fixed. Carol Dweck's "growth mindset" (praise effort, not ability) is hugely popular in schools — but the education system contradicts it (constant testing), and critics (Gelman, Bates) say the research is weak and hard to replicate. The writer concludes growth mindset may work better as a philosophy than as a classroom intervention.

  • Para 1: The old view of fixed, innate intelligence (Binet) was replaced by the idea that intelligence can be developed (Dewey).
  • Para 2: The growth mindset is very popular; it coaxes students to see failure as a chance to improve ("smart is something you can get").
  • Para 3: Dweck's key experiment: children praised for effort tried harder later; those praised for intelligence avoided risk. Praising ability made them perform worse.
  • Para 4: The biggest obstacle is the education system itself — obsessed with testing and fixed target grades (a fixed-mindset trait).
  • Para 5–7: Critics: Gelman says the research design is too flexible; Bates finds null results. Dweck responds well, saying her work is misunderstood/misapplied (not just self-esteem).
  • Later paras: Interventions should be subtle. Achievement drives self-perception more than the reverse. The writer concludes: teach concrete skills and praise effort; growth mindset works best as a philosophy, not a direct intervention.

Passage 3: Alfred Wegener & Continental Drift

What it's about: An extract from Mott T Greene's biography of Alfred Wegener, who proposed "continental drift" in 1912 — the idea that continents move, now central to plate tectonics. Wegener was not a geologist but an atmospheric physicist and explorer. Greene reflects on how little written material Wegener left, and how our lives often "happen to us" rather than being fully planned.

  • Intro: Wegener proposed continental drift in 1912 and developed it for ~20 years; his book had four editions and caused international controversy in his lifetime.
  • His idea: Continents move laterally, using evidence from geology, geophysics, paleontology and climatology. His idea underlies plate tectonics (a descendant, as modern evolution descends from Darwin).
  • Not a geologist: He trained as an astronomer, worked in atmospheric physics. Yet he was not unknown — a balloon record (52 hours with his brother), a dangerous Greenland expedition, and a thermodynamics textbook (1911).
  • Greene's method: Drift was a sideline to his atmospheric work; Greene places it in that larger context. Wegener shifted interests often; the parts make more sense taken together.
  • Little written record: Wegener left few letters, no diaries, avoided societies and politics — unlike Newton/Darwin/Faraday. Greene concludes most of us are not really the authors of our own lives; life often "happens to us".
