Passage 1: How Tennis Rackets Have Changed

What it's about: Small, often hidden changes to tennis rackets — the strings and the frame — can make a big difference at the top level. The passage uses Andy Murray, the Bryan brothers, Pete Sampras and others as examples, then explains the history of racket modification and the different string materials.

  • Murray's transformation: In 2016 Andy Murray became world number one. Two changes helped: a visible one (hiring coach Ivan Lendl in 2011) and a subtle one (switching the "mains" strings to synthetic in 2012).
  • Customisation for the elite: Professionals have rackets custom-made to their needs, so the exact rackets they use are not sold to the public. The Bryan brothers, for example, adjust length and even paint, and use rackets that are heavier than average with a denser string pattern.
  • History of modification: Racket tweaking dates from the 1970s "spaghetti-strung" racket (banned for creating too much topspin). Today it is as important as nutrition or training. Changes fall into two types: to the string bed and to the frame — the string bed being far more common.
  • String materials: Old rackets used natural gut (from animal intestines). From the early 1990s cheaper, more durable synthetics appeared — nylon, Kevlar and co-polyester. Co-polyester is the most used and gives about 25% more spin, suiting today's baseline game.
  • Frame changes: Some players change the frame itself — Pete Sampras added lead weights for serving power, and Gonçalo Oliveira replaced his grips with thinner ones. These customisations have pushed the game to levels few could have imagined in the wooden-racket era.

Passage 2: The Pirates of the Ancient Mediterranean

What it's about: Long before Caribbean pirates, pirates raided the Mediterranean for thousands of years. The passage (paragraphs A–G) explains why geography helped them, how ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome each dealt with piracy, and how the Roman general Pompey finally wiped it out.

  • A: Most people picture Caribbean pirates, but for millennia BCE pirates threatened Mediterranean trade routes. Only when they threatened Rome directly did Rome (under Pompey) build a fleet and end piracy.
  • B: Piracy predates its first record. Geography helped: many coastal people relied on the sea, knew the coastline, and hid in coves. Before ocean-going caravels, ships stayed near the coast on known routes — easy targets.
  • C: Governments sometimes used pirates in wartime as a first wave of attack; some regions gave pirates safe harbours and profited.
  • D: The first named pirate groups (the Lukka and Sherden) appear in the Amarna Letters of Pharaoh Akhenaten. The king of Alashiya (Cyprus) denied any connection with the Lukka.
  • E: The Greeks relied on the sea and even admired piracy — Homer praised pirates, and high officials took part. Attempts to curb it failed because pirates were so numerous.
  • F: Rome actually profited from piracy (pirate raids supplied slaves), so it did nothing — until pirates attacked grain ships and even kidnapped Roman dignitaries, including Julius Caesar in 75 BCE.
  • G: In 67 BCE Pompey got vast funds, divided the sea into 13 districts, and cleared each in turn. Surviving pirates were resettled as farmers far from the sea, boosting Rome's economy.

Passage 3: The Persistence and Peril of Misinformation

What it's about: Brian Southwell examines how our brains judge whether information is true, and why correcting widespread falsehoods is so hard. Key points: people tend to believe things at first (Spinoza's view), media rarely blocks misinformation in advance, and correction needs sustained, coordinated effort.

  • Misinformation is old but newly dangerous: People have shared inaccurate information for thousands of years, but today technology spreads it instantly to huge audiences — though the same channels might also help correct it.
  • Three observations: (1) people tend to believe misinformation at first; (2) media rarely blocks it before it appears; (3) countering it once it has spread is resource-heavy.
  • Descartes vs Spinoza: Descartes thought we judge truth before accepting; Spinoza thought we accept everything as true by default, then later tag it true or false. Modern research supports Spinoza — we encode information as if true, even briefly.
  • Regulation is reactive: Agencies like the FDA focus on catching problems after broadcast (e.g. the 'Bad Ad' program), not preventing them — and even corrected misinformation can keep affecting attitudes.
  • Correction & the future: Corrective campaigns must be understandable, so media-literacy education (even in primary school) helps. The solution is coordinated, long-term effort — not a single one-time cure.
