Passage 1: The Industrial Revolution in Britain

What it's about: How Britain changed from a rural, farming society into an industrial one from the mid-1700s. The passage covers steam power, coal, the textile and iron industries, communications (telegraphy), rapid urbanisation, and the Luddite resistance to machines.

  • Steam power: Newcomen built the first modern steam engine (to pump water out of mines). Watt and Boulton improved it — a piston driven both ways, linked by gears to make rotary motion, letting steam power spread across industry.
  • Coal & transport: Demand for cheap coal grew to run factories and steam transport. Trevithick's locomotive (early 1800s) and steam boats carried goods by 1830.
  • Textiles: Once a "cottage industry" done at home, textiles were transformed by the spinning jenny and power loom, which needed much less labour and let factories meet demand.
  • Iron: Smelting iron with coke (not charcoal) was cheaper and gave higher-quality metal, letting production expand for the Napoleonic Wars and the railways.
  • Communications & cities: Cooke and Wheatstone patented the first telegraphy (used for railway signalling). Industrialisation turned towns into cities fast, but these were polluted and lacked sanitation.
  • The Luddites: Skilled weavers who feared machines would take their jobs began smashing textile machines (from 1811, named after Ned Ludd). The government made machine-breaking punishable by death; by 1813 the resistance had ended.

Passage 2: Athletes and Stress

What it's about: Why athletes feel stress and how it affects performance. Using Emma Raducanu's Wimbledon withdrawal as an example, the passage (paragraphs A–F) explains the "demands vs resources" model, "challenge" and "threat" states, the roles of adrenaline and cortisol, anxiety, and ways athletes can respond positively.

  • A: Athletes face intense psychological pressure. Emma Raducanu withdrew from Wimbledon 2021 when she could not regulate her breathing and heart rate.
  • B: Stress comes from the balance of demands (effort, danger of injury, difficulty) and resources (confidence, control, looking forward to the event). B:
  • C: More resources → a positive "challenge" state; too many demands → a negative "threat" state. Challenge states lead to good performance, threat states to poor. Raducanu's case was a threat response.
  • D: Adrenaline and cortisol are the "stress hormones". In a challenge state, adrenaline raises blood flow to muscles and brain (better performance).
  • (D cont.): In a threat state, cortisol blocks adrenaline's benefit — tighter blood vessels, higher pressure, slower responses, worse decisions; in tennis, more unsuccessful serves. threat
  • E: Anxiety is common — it raises heart rate and can cause tremors, nausea, poor concentration; repeated anxiety with negative responses can harm heart health and cause depression.
  • F: Athletes can respond positively through the language coaches/parents use, by reframing physical signs as excitement (not nerves), through visualisation, and by recreating competitive pressure in training.

Passage 3: An Inquiry into the Existence of the Gifted Child

What it's about: The writer argues that "giftedness" may be less innate than we assume. Using mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, Einstein, and the research of Eyre, Ericsson and Bloom, the passage suggests high performance mostly comes from the right attitudes, deliberate practice and strong support — much of which can be taught.

  • Mirzakhani: The only woman to win the Fields Medal was not an obvious "gifted" child — she loved reading, not maths, and did poorly at first, until a puzzle her brother shared hooked her.
  • Nobel winners & Einstein: Most Nobel winners were unexceptional children; Einstein was slow to talk, failed part of an entry test, and struggled at first — but kept going.
  • Eyre's view: Brains are flexible; the behaviours behind high performance (even curiosity) are replicable and can be taught, if children get the right attitudes and support at home and school ("high performance learning").
  • Ericsson & Bloom: Ericsson found deliberate practice (~10,000 hours), not innate talent, produces experts — trained "random" students outperformed supposedly gifted ones. Bloom found high achievers had parents who encouraged them and strong work ethics.
  • Deprived children & Einstein again: Among children succeeding despite hardship, the key was an adult who valued education. Einstein credited character and persistence ("I stay with problems longer"), not raw intellect.
