Passage 1: Archaeologists Discover Evidence of Prehistoric Island Settlers

What it's about: Dr Ceri Shipton's team excavated the Indonesian island of Obi and found evidence that people lived there for tens of thousands of years, hunting, foraging and even voyaging between islands. The passage traces the finds — clam-shell then stone axes, bones, obsidian, beads — and how the site was used and abandoned over time.

  • The project: Shipton's team were the first archaeologists on Obi, studying how people spread from Asia towards Australia/New Guinea. The "Wallacean" islands, including Obi, were likely stepping stones — but they needed evidence of early occupation.
  • The Kelo caves: Near Kelo village they dug two rock shelters, finding axes up to 14,000 years old — the earliest made from clam shells, likely used to build canoes to keep island communities connected.
  • Earliest occupation & climate: The oldest layers date back ~18,000 years, when the climate was drier and colder, sea levels 120 m lower, and Obi was a much larger island.
  • Switch to stone: ~11,700 years ago the climate warmed, the jungle thickened, and stone axes replaced shell ones — stone takes twice as long to grind but keeps its edge longer, useful for clearing dense forest.
  • Diet & travel: Bones show they hunted the cuscus (a possum-like animal). Obsidian and beads (not native to Obi) prove trade/travel between islands.
  • Abandonment & return: The shelters were used ~10,000 years, then abandoned ~8,000 years ago (perhaps the jungle grew too thick, or people moved to fish on the coast). ~1,000 years ago they were reoccupied by people with pottery, gold and silver — likely spice traders.

Passage 2: The Global Importance of Wetlands

What it's about: Wetlands support millions of livelihoods and fight climate change, yet half the world's wetlands have been lost since 1990. The passage (paragraphs A–H) explains their value, how draining peatlands releases carbon and causes subsidence, the subtle damage from farming, and expert views on how to protect them.

  • A–B: Half the world's wetlands have vanished since 1990. They are complex, life-rich ecosystems of great religious, historical and archaeological value, supporting the livelihoods of millions in developing countries.
  • C: Wetlands mitigate climate change — buffering coasts from sea-level rise and storms. Restoring wetland forests can be simple and cheap, not just about money.
  • D: Wetlands are sources of palm oil and pulpwood. Drained peatlands become carbon emitters (6% of global emissions) and raise fire risk.
  • E: Logging companies drain the peat; bacteria then turn the carbon into CO₂ and methane, while the peat sinks (subsidence). Peat is 90% water, so tropical peat may drop below water level within 50 years, flooding land.
  • F: Tickner (WWFN) warns of subtle, invisible damage — sediment run-off, fertilisers, over-extraction of water — often from people just trying to make a living, not deliberate harm.
  • G–H: Silvius stresses income generation matters; McCartney (IWMI) says local people will only protect wetlands if they value and profit from them. Governments differ; awareness is slowly growing.

Passage 3: Is the Era of Artificial Speech Translation Upon Us?

What it's about: Devices that translate speech in real time are now appearing, but how good are they? Through Professor Waibel and Waverly Labs, the passage looks at the challenges (noise, needing to work offline, cultural etiquette), current uses, and argues that software will never fully replace the deeper value of sharing a language.

  • The noise problem: Waibel says noise is a major challenge — devices work in labs but struggle with background sound (as on his scratchy line from Kyoto). We haven't reached the future yet.
  • An old dream: At Karlsruhe, lecturers speak German and students read English via a translator. The "Babel fish" idea (from Douglas Adams' 1979 novel) has long symbolised such devices; now prototypes are appearing.
  • Novelty vs profession: They are seen as novelties, good for hotel check-ins, where the social function matters more than accuracy. Waverly Labs (Andrew Ochoa) is building a professional model with better speech recognition and speed.
  • Sharing earpieces & Asia: Both speakers need "Pilot" earpieces — sharing one with a stranger feels awkward. Voice translation has taken off in Asia (e.g. Japan), but a system must be simultaneous, work offline, and address privacy fears. earpiece
  • Etiquette & the human value: Systems must be socially aware (respecting cultural norms). Even so, software can never replace the subtle understanding that comes with truly knowing a language; the social value of sharing a language will persist.
