Passage 1: The Impact of Climate Change on Butterflies in Britain

What it's about: Two-thirds of British butterfly species have declined in 40 years. As spring warms, butterflies "advance their phenology" (become active earlier). A new study finds flexible, multi-generation species benefit from this, while single-generation species with specific habitats are harmed.

  • The decline & why it matters: ~two-thirds of species have fallen in 40 years. Butterflies matter in the food chain — caterpillars eat plants and are prey for birds and bats. Understanding the cause is key to reversing the decline.
  • Phenology: Butterflies need "just right" temperatures. As summers warm, many cope by shifting when they are active — "advancing their phenology". Over 20 years, as spring warmed ~0.5°C, species advanced by days to a week.
  • The study: Researchers used millions of records from amateur enthusiasts on 130 species, estimating abundance, distribution and northward spread.
  • Winners: Species with flexible lifecycles (multiple generations per year, e.g. the Small Blue) benefit — early emergence lets summer generations complete another cycle, growing the population.
  • Losers: Single-generation species in specific habitats (e.g. the endangered High Brown Fritillary) show no benefit and may be harmed by advancing phenology.
  • Hope & warnings: Some single-generation species (Silver-studded Blue) may add a second generation in warm years. The White Admiral (southern England) declined recently — possibly its honeysuckle diet, possibly climate change.

Answers Explained · Questions 1–13 (উত্তরের ব্যাখ্যা)

QAnswerWhy (কেন)
1FALSENumbers have declined over 40 years, so there were more (not fewer) butterflies 40 years ago.
2TRUECaterpillars are prey for birds, bats and other small mammals — several predators.
3FALSEPhenology is the timing of lifecycle events, not the ability to change their location. phenology
4NOT GIVENAdvancing phenology is discussed, but not a reduced lifespan from spring warming.
5FALSEWhether butterflies adapt well or are "dragged along" is still unknown — the reason is not clear.
6TRUEData came from millions of records submitted by butterfly enthusiasts (amateurs).
7coloniesThe Small Blue lives in large colonies.
8springIt first appears at the start of spring.
9endangeredThe High Brown Fritillary is considered more endangered than other species.
10habitat(s)Its caterpillars occupy a limited range of habitats.
11EuropeThe Silver-studded Blue reproduces twice a year in warm areas of Europe.
12southernThe White Admiral is found in southern areas of England.
13dietBoth climate change and the diet of the caterpillar are possible reasons for its decline.

Passage 2: Deep-Sea Mining

What it's about: The deep sea holds both life-saving medicines (from unique bacteria) and vast metal reserves — and these goals conflict. The passage (paragraphs A–F) weighs the case for mining rare metals against warnings from scientists that mining would gravely damage little-known, valuable ecosystems.

  • A: Professor Mat Upton found a deep-sea sponge microbe that kills superbugs — a potential life-saving medicine. But he fears this potential will be lost in the rush to mine the sea's metals.
  • B: Upton wants a pause to weigh pros and cons. New species (tailed sea cucumbers, a 'Dumbo' octopus) could hold lifesaving potential; a new antibiotic could take a decade to develop, but commercial mining has already begun.
  • C: The deep sea holds more nickel, cobalt and rare metals than all land reserves. Miners argue demand for copper, cobalt (EV batteries) etc. is soaring and deep-sea ore is superior with little waste. Extraction draws up a seawater slurry, "de-waters" it, then discharges the water back.
  • D: Environmental/legal groups urge caution — no global rulebook yet, and past resource rushes disregarded the environment and indigenous peoples. Knowledge of the deep seabed is very limited (less than the Moon or Mars).
  • E: Hydrothermal vents (where seawater meets magma) support crucial biodiversity and climate functions. Scientists say mining is a grave threat, producing sediment plumes and waste; Dr Copley says "we don't want mining on them".
  • F: Mining firms (Mike Johnston, Nautilus) call it sustainable exploration of untapped potential with lower impact than land mining. But critics like Verena Tunnicliffe say it would be the greatest assault on deep-sea ecosystems, and active vents must be off-limits.

Passage 3: The Unselfish Gene

What it's about: A psychologist challenges the idea that humans are naturally selfish. He argues that prehistoric life was not a brutal struggle; sparse populations and egalitarian hunter-gatherers (like the !Kung) suggest cooperation and sharing are our natural traits, and that selfishness developed later, with farming and settlement.

  • The common assumption: People assume humans are essentially selfish and only good by controlling this. This bleak view is linked to Dawkins' The Selfish Gene (1976), which fitted the competitive ethos of its time and drew on evolutionary psychology.
  • The false premise: Prehistory is usually seen as intense competition where only the ruthless survived — but this rests on a false assumption.
  • Sparse populations: The prehistoric world was very sparsely populated (Europe ~29,000 people 15,000 years ago). With such low densities, hunter-gatherers had little need to compete or make war.
  • Contemporary evidence (!Kung): Modern hunter-gatherers show "extreme political and sexual egalitarianism" — they don't accumulate property, must share, and prevent status differences. The !Kung swap arrows so no one gets the credit for a kill, and ostracise the domineering. Women have high autonomy.
  • Conclusion: Cooperation, egalitarianism and peacefulness were normal for tens of thousands of years, so they are likely innate. Selfishness, warfare and patriarchy came later — perhaps a psychological change with farming (disrupted primate habitats also turn violent), too recent to be explained in evolutionary terms.
