Passage 1: Airports on Water

What it's about: As big coastal cities run out of land and cannot tolerate aircraft noise, engineers have built airports on reclaimed land in the sea. The passage describes Japan's Kansai airport in Osaka Bay and Hong Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok near Lantau Island. Building at sea is hard: the seabed of soft sand and stiff clay slowly settles under the weight, so engineers must predict the settlement, protect the island with sea walls, cope with heavy rainfall and typhoons, and lay a geotextile mat to spread the load. The land is shaped to hold runways, taxiways and the terminal building.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Why build at sea: no land, no noise over homes.
  • Reclaimed islands: Kansai & Chek Lap Kok.
  • Settlement problem: soft seabed sinks under load.
  • Engineering fixes: sea walls, geotextile, drainage. প্রাচীর, geotextile, নিষ্কাশন।

Passage 2: Changing our Understanding of Health

What it's about: The passage traces how the idea of "health" has changed. A negative definition simply means the absence of disease. The World Health Organisation's famous 1946 definition was positive — health as complete physical, mental and social well-being — but critics said this ideal suited only the wealthy members of society. From the 1970s a broader view emerged, seeing health as shaped by social, economic and environmental factors, not just biology or medicine. The writer reviews these competing definitions and their strengths and weaknesses.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Negative definition: just no disease.
  • WHO 1946: positive, complete well-being.
  • Criticism: an ideal for the wealthy only.
  • 1970s onward: social/economic/environmental view.

Passage 3: Children's Thinking

What it's about: This passage reviews psychology experiments on whether young children reason the way adults do. Clark Hull studied deductive reasoning with a puzzle-box; Howard and Tracey Kendler devised a two-stage task and found children could do each step but not link them together; Michael Cole and colleagues questioned whether such tasks are fair across cultures; and Simon Hewson argued that when the task is made clear and familiar, children can in fact reason logically — the earlier "failures" came from misunderstanding the task, not an inability to think.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Question: do children reason like adults?
  • Kendlers: children can't link two steps.
  • Cole: tasks may be culturally unfair.
  • Hewson: clear tasks reveal real ability.
