Passage 1: Ethical Consumers & the Mintel Report
What it's about: Based on a Mintel survey, the passage looks at ethical (green) consumers — people who take a company's behaviour into account when they shop. It distinguishes true "ethical spenders" from "armchair ethicals", who care but do not change their buying, and reports how many shoppers avoid, for example, animal-tested goods. Mintel predicts that firms will have to show more honesty and openness with consumers and keep a good social record.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Ethical consumers judge company behaviour.
- "Armchair ethicals": care but don't act.
- Animal testing is a top concern.
- Firms must show honesty and a social record.

Passage 2: Reading, Pictures & the Decline in Literacy
What it's about: The passage argues that picture books may actually harm children's reading. As culture becomes more visual, pictures compete for attention and can slow reading and mislead children about word meaning. It cites researchers such as the Canadian Dale Willows and the American psychologist Jay Samuels, who found that children given words without pictures learned more words than those given illustrations. The writer links this to a wider, worrying decline in literacy, even among intelligent readers.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Pictures can hinder early reading.
- Willows & Samuels: words alone work better.
- Visual culture makes it worse.
- Literacy is declining, the writer warns.

Passage 3: The Human Genome Project
What it's about: The passage discusses the Human Genome Project, the huge effort to "spell out" all the letters of human DNA. It compares the project's scale to the Apollo space programme and notes it may be completed early in the next century, mapping around 7,000 genes. Supporters hope it will free humanity from disease — already the genes behind muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis have been found — but the writer also reports fears about eugenics, discrimination and the misuse of genetic knowledge.
