This is a study companion for Cambridge IELTS 20, Test 1, Listening. Use it with your own copy of the book and its audio: do the test first, then use this page to see what each section was about, learn the vocabulary, and understand every answer and what you should have listened for.

Golden rule of Listening: the recording plays only once and the answers come in order. Before each part, read the questions and predict the type of word needed (name, number, place). Watch for distractors — the speaker often mentions a wrong option first.

Part 1: Choosing a Restaurant
Situation: a friendly conversation in which one person recommends restaurants to another for a family celebration. Question type: note completion (Q1–10), ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER. পরিস্থিতি: একজন আরেকজনকে পারিবারিক উৎসবের জন্য রেস্টুরেন্ট সুপারিশ করছেন। প্রশ্নের ধরন: নোট পূরণ, এক শব্দ ও/অথবা সংখ্যা।

Part 2: A Pottery Workshop
Situation: a potter (Heather) speaks to visitors about the craft of pottery and the equipment. Question types: multiple choice (Q11–16), then two "choose TWO letters" tasks (Q17–18, Q19–20). পরিস্থিতি: একজন কুম্ভকার দর্শকদের মৃৎশিল্প ও যন্ত্রপাতি নিয়ে বলছেন। ধরন: MCQ ও দুটি "দুটি অক্ষর বাছাই"।

Part 3: Research on Loneliness
Situation: two students (Tamara & Dev) discuss their research project on loneliness. Question types: three "choose TWO letters" tasks (Q21–26) and multiple choice (Q27–30).
