Passage 1: The Kākāpō

What it's about: The kākāpō is a large, night-active, flightless parrot from New Zealand that is critically endangered. The passage describes what it looks like and how it lives, why its numbers crashed after humans arrived, and the long conservation effort that is slowly bringing it back.

  • Opening paragraphs (appearance & habits): The bird is introduced — an owl-like face, mostly yellow-green feathers, and the fact that it is the only parrot in the world that cannot fly and may live very long. It lives alone, feeds on the ground, climbs trees but can only glide down, and is completely vegetarian.
  • Breeding: Kākāpō breed only in years when food is plentiful. The female alone sits on the eggs and feeds the chicks; the male does nothing. Because she must leave the nest to find food, the eggs and chicks are left exposed to predators.
  • Decline after humans: Once common, the bird was easy prey for the first Polynesian settlers (who used its meat and feathers) and the dogs and rats they brought. Later European settlers made things worse through forest clearance and by introducing deer (which ate the birds' food) and predators such as cats and stoats.
  • Early rescue attempts: An 1894 effort moved birds to a "predator-free" island, but stoats soon arrived and destroyed them. For decades the species was almost lost, until a large group — including, crucially, females — was confirmed on Rakiura Island around 1980.
  • The Recovery Plan: After feral cats caused more losses, survivors were moved to island sanctuaries. Numbers only rose once rats were removed and the birds were intensively managed — moved between islands, given extra food, and with failing chicks rescued and hand-raised. By 2020 the population had reached 210. Today's goals are protecting genetic diversity, keeping enough habitat, and keeping stakeholders involved.

Answers Explained · Questions 1–13 (উত্তরের ব্যাখ্যা)

QAnswerWhy (কেন)
1FALSEThe idea that other parrots also cannot fly is contradicted: the text says the kākāpō is the world's only flightless parrot.
2FALSEThey do not breed every year — only when food is plentiful.
3FALSEMales play no part in feeding; the female alone feeds the chicks.
4NOT GIVENBoth the rat and the settlers are mentioned as threats, but the text never says which was the greater threat.

Passage 2: Bringing Elms Back to Britain

What it's about: Around 25 million British elms (90% of them) died of Dutch elm disease in the 1960s–70s. This article, by Mark Rowe, looks at how the disease spread, why a few mature elms mysteriously survived, the tree's long history of uses, and the disagreement among experts about whether elms should be reintroduced.

  • Sections A–B (the loss & the cause): The elm was once a giant of the British landscape, then vanished. The disease is caused by a fungus that blocks the tree's water-carrying system; a second, more deadly outbreak in the 1970s was triggered by imported Canadian elm logs whose bark carried the beetles that spread it.
  • Section C (the survivors): Most elms now survive only as small hedgerow trees, because the beetle attacks them once the trunk reaches about 10–15 cm across. A few old survivors remain, and Karen Russell wants to study why they lived — is it avoidance, tolerance or resistance? The small number of survivors makes this research difficult.
  • Section D (history & uses): Elm was second only to oak as a hardwood. It was used from the Bronze Age for tools, shields and early swords, and later for crates, flooring, mining equipment, and the keel of the ship Cutty Sark.
  • Section E (a lucky place): Peter Bourne cares for Brighton's 17,000 elms. Strong sea winds make it hard for the beetle to attack, which is why the city's elms survived — but the threat is still nearby.
  • Sections F–G (the debate): Reintroduction depends on resistant or tolerant trees, often non-native hybrids tested by injecting the pathogen. But experts disagree: Russell sees a strong environmental case, while Elliot warns that replacing a native species with a near-copy is a kind of "cloning" that could bring new diseases; the Woodland Trust prefers protecting the survivors instead.

Passage 3: How Stress Affects Our Judgement

What it's about: A neuroscientist describes experiments — with firefighters and with students — showing how stress changes the way we take in information. The key finding: under stress we become especially quick to absorb bad news. Stress also spreads between people, the media amplifies it, but hopeful emotions are contagious too.

  • The question & the study: We often make big decisions while stressed. The writer studied firefighters, whose days swing between calm and dangerous, making them an ideal group to test whether stress helps or harms how we use information.
  • The method & finding: Firefighters estimated their chance of 40 bad life events, then were given good or bad news and asked to re-estimate. Normally people are optimistic and ignore bad news — but under stress they became "hyper-vigilant" to bad news, even news unrelated to their job, while their response to good news did not change.
  • The brain mechanism: A lab test on students (a surprise public speech) produced the same effect. Brain imaging shows stress flips a "switch" that boosts a learning signal for warning signs — making us more sensitive to signs of outside threat.
  • Why it evolved: For early humans surrounded by danger, quickly learning about threats aided survival; in safe times, constant alertness would be wasteful. People with depression or anxiety seem stuck in the "absorb all bad news" state.
  • Spread & consequences: Stress passes between people and through social media. After a disaster, a wave of alarming news exaggerates the danger, so people cancel trips or sell shares needlessly. The hopeful ending: positive feelings spread too, so understanding this can help us communicate better and drive useful change.
