Passage 1: Frozen Food
What it's about: A history of how frozen food developed, mostly in the USA — from ancient ice preservation, through the invention of 'mechanical ice' and Clarence Birdseye's quick-freezing methods, to the 1950s 'TV Dinner' and today's huge industry.
- Early preservation: Ice has preserved food for thousands of years; Andean people froze and dried potatoes to keep their nutrition. Natural ice was the main method until the late 1800s, when trains carried butter cooled by ice.
- Mechanical ice: In 1870, Australians made 'mechanical ice' (first to cool beer). Cattlemen used it to ship frozen meat to England in 1880, but ice crystals burst the cells and spoilt the flavour.
- Birdseye's innovations: Inspired by the Inuit, Clarence Birdseye developed quick-freezing (which reduced crystal damage), freezing food in its package, and see-through cellophane packaging.
- Growth & the TV Dinner: World War II boosted frozen food because tin was needed for weapons, so canned food was rationed. By the 1950s most homes had a refrigerator, and in 1954 Swanson's cheap, convenient 'TV Dinner' became a huge success.

Passage 2: Can the planet's coral reefs be saved?
What it's about: London Zoo has built a giant artificial reef to show the public how wonderful reefs are and to support research. The passage explains what corals are, the threats they face (mainly warming seas), and how scientists are trying to find hardy corals and speed up breeding to save them.
- Sections A–B (the reef & what corals are): The zoo's new gallery has two goals — to show how wonderful reefs are and to highlight conservation research. Corals are tiny polyps that get their colour and food from algae living inside them, in a partnership (symbiosis); reefs cover very little sea bed but shelter over a quarter of marine species.
- Section C (a disputed phrase): Reefs are called 'rainforests of the sea', but David Attenborough disagrees with the comparison, saying a reef is even more full of visible life.
- Section D (a warning): Reefs are seriously threatened, mainly by heat causing bleaching, plus acidification, pollution and current changes; over 90% could be lost by 2050.
- Sections E–F (working on solutions & hope): Scientists search for corals that survive warm, acidic water and try to make corals spawn more often. This global research is shared, and the results are shown to the public to give hope that reefs can be saved.

Passage 3: Robots and us
What it's about: Three experts — Martin Rees, Daniel Wolpert and Kathleen Richardson — answer questions about our relationship with robots: whether to use them to colonise planets, when machines might outsmart us, whether we should fear AI, and what science fiction tells us.
The Three Experts (তিন বিশেষজ্ঞের মত)
- Martin Rees (A) — cosmologist: Robots will map the solar system and mine asteroids; colonised planets should be preserved like Antarctica. He warns we may one day need to treat advanced robots fairly, and that we must keep robots as clever 'idiot savants' that cannot outwit us. He values good science fiction.
- Daniel Wolpert (B) — engineer: No pressing need to colonise planets; better to use robots to gather resources nearer home. Machines already beat us at some tasks, but true creative human intelligence is more than 50 years away. He thinks the benefits of robots outweigh the harms, and that robots are central to science fiction.
- Kathleen Richardson (C) — anthropologist: Colonisation is morally questionable. Our fear of machines comes from personifying objects — imagining they are more powerful than they are. Robots have never actually challenged us, so the risk is smaller than we think, and many people welcome them. She wants us to rethink how we separate reality and fantasy.
