Passage 1: The Rocket — From East to West

What it's about: This passage traces the history of the rocket, which works on the reaction principle (a jet of gas pushing the rocket the other way). The Chinese built early gunpowder weapons such as the "basket of fire", the Arabs developed the "egg which moves and burns", and rockets later reached India, whose rocketeers used them successfully against the British in the eighteenth century. The British then built iron "barrage rockets", and the Americans made their own launcher-mounted rockets in the nineteenth century. Although results were often unpredictable, these humble beginnings laid the foundation for modern space programmes.

চীনারা "basket of fire"-এর মতো বারুদ-অস্ত্র বানায়, আরবরা "egg which moves and burns", পরে ভারতে রকেট পৌঁছে যেখানে অষ্টাদশ শতকে ব্রিটিশদের বিরুদ্ধে সফলভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Reaction principle drives every rocket.
  • Chinese & Arabs built the earliest versions.
  • India & Britain used rockets in war.
  • Foundation for today's space travel.

Passage 2: The Risks of Cigarette Smoke

What it's about: A study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) argues that second-hand (passive) smoke harms non-smokers even more than smokers. Smokers' bodies adapt to damage over time, but non-smokers get no such protection. The report explains that harm comes from many components: carbon monoxide competes with oxygen in red blood cells, while nicotine and other toxins activate platelets and encourage blood clots. The researchers criticise consultants working for the tobacco industry, cite earlier findings linking passive smoking to 30,000–60,000 US deaths a year, and call for smoke-free workplaces and public places.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Passive smoke harms non-smokers most.
  • Many components cause harm, not one.
  • Carbon monoxide & nicotine damage heart/blood.
  • Call for smoke-free public places.

Passage 3: The Scientific Method

What it's about: Taken from a guide for research students, this passage explains how scientific research really works. Many people believe science is inductive — that it starts with unbiased observation of "facts" from which theories emerge. The writer argues, following Karl Popper and Peter Medawar, that this is a myth: every observation is shaped by expectations, so research actually begins with a hypothesis (often reached by guesswork or inspiration), which is then tested rigorously by deducing and checking predictions. This is the hypothetico-deductive method. The aim is to help PhD students understand the process so they do not feel they are "cheating".

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Induction is a myth: no unbiased observation.
  • Research starts with a hypothesis.
  • Hypothetico-deductive: test predictions.
  • Helps students understand real research.
