Passage 1: The Department of Ethnography
What it's about: The Department of Ethnography of the British Museum, created in 1946, collects and documents objects from the peoples of Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Pacific and parts of Europe. Its focus in the twentieth century has been on small-scale societies, and its collections hold about 300,000 artefacts — both extraordinary and everyday. Much modern collecting is done in the field. The passage introduces categories the museum uses, such as technical series (TS), artefact types (AT), field assemblages (FA) and objects reflecting social experience (SE), and stresses that the Department aims to display a broad range of a society's cultural life rather than only single valuable objects.
বিভাগ ব্যবহার করে বিভাগ: technical series (TS), artefact types (AT), field assemblages (FA), social experience (SE)।

Passage 2: Secrets of the Forest
What it's about: Early researchers among the Indian Amazons concluded that the tribes were simple, "primitive" societies and that Amazonia could never support a complex civilisation. The passage challenges this: recent discoveries of the remains of large, organised communities show that early indigenous peoples once lived there in far greater numbers. Ecologists have also learned that today's "natural" rainforest was in fact shaped by these prehistoric inhabitants. These insights, associated with researchers such as Peter Feinsinger, suggest that the assumption of a purely natural ecosystem is wrong — and that they should change present policies on development in the region.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Old view: Amazonia cannot support complex societies.
- New evidence: large early communities existed.
- Humans shaped the "natural" forest.
- Implication: rethink development policy.

Passage 3: Highs & Lows
What it's about: This passage looks at how weather and light affect the moods and behaviour of humans and animals. Dull winter light can cause a form of depression called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), treated with full-spectrum lamps. The hormone melatonin, whose level falls with more daylight, drives seasonal behaviour in animals such as stags and hamsters — these changes are triggered by time cues. Hot weather is linked to more street riots, though this may be because more people are outside. Positively charged air before thunderstorms raises serotonin levels, making people irritable, and cold water can distract divers and impair their mental performance.
