Passage 1: Children's ideas about tropical rainforests

What it's about: Because of dramatic media coverage, children form ideas about tropical rainforests before they are ever taught about them at school — and many of these ideas are wrong. In a study, secondary-school children answered a questionnaire with five open questions. Most described rainforests simply as damp, wet or hot places, and located them in Africa, South America or Brazil. On why rainforests matter, the commonest answer was that they supply oxygen; on why they are disappearing, most blamed human activity. The writer notes that these misconceptions become locked into an organised framework, so schools need to help pupils re-express and correct their ideas.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Media, not school, shapes children's first ideas.
  • Common answers: located in Africa/S. America; give oxygen.
  • Misconceptions become fixed and organised.
  • Teaching must correct, not just add facts.

Passage 2: The senses of cetaceans

What it's about: Cetaceans — whales, dolphins and porpoises — have senses adapted to life in water. Their sense of smell has largely disappeared, and taste is limited (some have poorly developed taste buds). Touch, however, is well developed, especially around the blowhole. Vision varies: baleen whales probably lack stereoscopic vision, most dolphins see forward and downward, freshwater dolphins forward and upward, and river species such as the Indian susu are almost blind. Their strongest sense is hearing and echolocation: large baleen whales use low frequencies, while toothed species use a wide range of sounds — a well-developed acoustic sense that more than makes up for their other weaknesses.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Smell gone, taste weak, touch strong.
  • Vision varies by species and habitat.
  • Acoustic sense is the strongest of all.
  • Clear water favours good vision; muddy rivers do not.

Passage 3: Visual Symbols and the Blind

What it's about: Can blind people understand pictures made of raised lines? Researchers gave blind volunteers raised-line drawings to feel and found they could recognise shapes and even interpret symbols much as sighted people do. In one experiment, people were asked to link pairs of opposite words (such as soft–hard, fast–slow) to different line patterns; blind and sighted groups made surprisingly similar choices. This suggests that many of the conventions we use in pictures — showing movement, depth or feeling — are not purely visual but are shared by touch. The findings challenge the assumption that pictorial understanding depends on sight alone.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Blind people can read raised-line pictures.
  • Word-pair experiment: matched opposites to lines.
  • Blind and sighted gave similar answers.
  • Picture conventions are partly shared by touch.
