Passage 1: Lost for Words
What it's about: The world's linguistic diversity is shrinking fast — perhaps half of its 6,800 languages may vanish within two generations. A language is endangered not simply by having few speakers but by how old its speakers are: if children stop learning it, it dies. The passage explains why this happens — isolation once bred diversity, but economic globalisation and social pressures now push small communities toward dominant languages, and people lose faith in their own cultural identity. Governments have sometimes banned minority languages to promote unity. The writer discusses efforts to record and revive threatened languages before their traditional skills and knowledge are lost.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Half of all languages may soon disappear.
- Age of speakers matters more than number.
- Globalisation pushes out small languages.
- Recording & revival try to save them.

Passage 2: Alternative Medicine in Australia
What it's about: Australia was long unusual in the Western world for its conservative attitude to natural or alternative therapies, because its doctors were powerful and reluctant to share their position. Yet public disenchantment with orthodox medicine has driven a steady rise in visits to chiropractors, naturopaths, osteopaths, acupuncturists and herbalists. The passage discusses a survey of patient satisfaction: many people turn to alternative practitioners for problems that are chronic or hard to treat — such as emotional difficulties, headaches and a sense of general ill health — and report feeling listened to. The 1994 launch of a university course in alternative medicine marked growing acceptance by the medical establishment.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Australia's doctors were slow to accept alternatives.
- Public demand for alternative therapies rose.
- Chronic/emotional problems drive people to them.
- University course signals acceptance.

Passage 3: Play is a Serious Business
What it's about: Play looks like carefree fun, but it is costly and even dangerous — playing young animals waste energy and can miss approaching predators. So why has it evolved? An older idea was that play builds muscle or hunting skills, but the writer shows this is too simple: the fitness benefits of exercise fade, and predatory "practice" does not neatly predict adult skill. The newer view, supported by researchers such as John Byers, is that play helps build bigger, better brains. Playfulness is common mainly among mammals (and some larger-brained birds), and appears to shape the developing brain during a critical early window rather than merely rehearsing adult behaviour.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Play is risky and costly, so it must matter.
- Exercise/skills theories are too simple.
- New idea: play builds bigger brains.
- Mainly in mammals during an early window.
