Passage 1: How Much Higher? How Much Faster?
What it's about: Athletic records have improved dramatically over the last century — but why, and how far can it go? The passage examines several causes. Genetics alone cannot explain the gains; better training methods do much of the work. Professor Yessis argues that runners rely too much on natural gifts and should adopt techniques like plyometrics, which increase muscular power, while poor nutrition and trace-mineral deficiencies can cause injuries. New ideas often come from athletes themselves — the passage describes the "Fosbury flop" and how biomechanics and improved equipment help. Experts conclude that records will keep being broken, if only by tiny margins, as training and technology advance.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Records keep improving, but why?
- Training beats genetics in explaining gains.
- Plyometrics & nutrition raise power, cut injuries.
- Biomechanics & equipment add small gains.

Passage 2: The Nature and Aims of Archaeology
What it's about: Archaeology is described as the "past tense of cultural anthropology". While cultural anthropologists study living communities, archaeologists study past societies mainly through their material remains — buildings, tools and artefacts. A key task is to interpret this material culture in human terms, and modern "ethnoarchaeology" even studies present-day communities to learn how objects are used. Because written records only begin around 3000 BC, archaeology is the main source of information about most of the human past, though oral histories also matter. The passage stresses that archaeology is both a humanistic study and a historical discipline, yet in its careful, evidence-based method the archaeologist works rather like a scientist.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Studies the past through material remains.
- Ethnoarchaeology learns from living communities.
- Main source for most of human history.
- Humanistic yet scientific in method.

Passage 3: The Problem of Scarce Resources
What it's about: How should health-care resources be shared out fairly and efficiently? Every developed society must decide how much to spend on health, which treatments to prioritise and who gets special consideration. What changed from the 1950s onwards was a new awareness that resources — including health-care resources — are finite. At the same time, a contrary idea grew: that people have a basic right to health care, like education or transport. The passage explores the tension between these two ideas — limited resources versus rising expectations — and how societies try to balance cost, need and fairness in deciding who receives care.

- Tension between limits and expectations.
