Passage 1: Johnson's Dictionary
What it's about: Before 1755 there was no standard way of spelling or using English. Dr Samuel Johnson set out to fix this by writing a dictionary almost single-handedly. He signed a contract with the bookseller Robert Dodsley, rented a house, and hired copying clerks who worked standing at a long desk. Over years he defined more than 40,000 words in 80 notebooks. When published, the Dictionary was hailed across Europe as a landmark: according to his biographer James Boswell, Johnson's great achievement was bringing stability to the English language. As a reward, the king granted him a pension.

Passage 2: Nature or Nurture?
What it's about: This passage describes Stanley Milgram's famous obedience experiment at Yale. Volunteers ("teacher-subjects") were told they were testing whether punishment helps learning, and were instructed to give a "pupil" (actually an actor) ever-stronger electric shocks for wrong answers. Although the pupil screamed and begged them to stop, most teacher-subjects obeyed the experimenter and continued to the highest level. Psychiatrists had predicted almost no one would go that far — they badly underestimated people's willingness to obey authority. The experiment raises the "nature or nurture" question about why people obey.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Obedience test: shocks for wrong answers.
- Most obeyed despite the pupil's distress.
- Experts underestimated this willingness.
- Raises nature-vs-nurture questions on behaviour.

Passage 3: The Truth about the Environment
What it's about: Environmentalists warn that natural resources are running out, that species are dying and that pollution is worsening. The writer argues that a look at the facts gives a different picture: resources are more abundant than in 1972, more food is produced per person, and only about 0.7% of species (not 25–50%) may disappear soon. He suggests four reasons why people wrongly believe the environment is getting worse — the lopsidedness of scientific funding, the media's need for dramatic stories, the way green groups (like other lobby groups) overstate claims, and a lack of scepticism toward them. Global warming is real, he admits, but he thinks the response matters more than the problem.

- Species loss is far smaller than often claimed.
- Four causes of the false perception.
- Global warming is real but manageable.
