Passage 1: Bakelite — The Birth of Modern Plastics
What it's about: In 1907 the Belgian-American scientist Leo Baekeland invented "Bakelite", the first fully synthetic thermosetting plastic, launching the modern plastics industry. The passage explains the difference between thermoplastic materials (which melt like candlewax and can be reshaped) and thermosetting ones (which, like eggs, set permanently). Early plastics were only semi-synthetic, made to replace scarce natural materials like ivory and tortoiseshell. Baekeland's real achievement was controlling the reaction between phenol and formaldehyde, using fillers and heat/pressure to mould strong objects. He named an early resin "Novalak".
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Bakelite (1907) = first fully synthetic thermosetting plastic.
- Thermoplastic vs thermosetting: reshapes vs sets forever.
- Replaced scarce natural materials.
- Key skill: controlling the chemical reaction.

Passage 2: What's So Funny?
What it's about: John McCrone reviews research on humour. Thinkers from Plato and Aristotle to Kant and Freud tried to explain why we laugh; most modern theorists see jokes as the sudden resolution of incongruity. Using brain scans (fMRI), Vinod Goel found that a joke first lights up the prefrontal cortex (linked to problem-solving) and the temporal lobes, and that the punchline activates the orbital cortex, associated with evaluating information and feelings. The passage also distinguishes cognitive laughter (from jokes) from social laughter (appeasement and play seen in animals). Humour, it argues, taps into our general thinking machinery.
Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)
- Jokes resolve incongruity — a sudden "Aha!".

Passage 3: The Birth of Scientific English
What it's about: How did English become the language of science? In the early 17th century, serious science was written in Latin for an international audience of scholars and doctors, while English lacked the technical vocabulary and grammatical resources to express new ideas. The founding of the Royal Society, contact with German scholarship, and later the industrial revolution pushed writers to develop scientific English. Newton first wrote in Latin (the Principia) but later chose English, reaching a local — but socially wider — audience. English gradually gained the words and structures science needed.
