Passage 1: The Impact of Wilderness Tourism

What it's about: Tourism to remote "wilderness" areas — deserts, mountains and Arctic lands — is booming because it needs little investment. But these regions are fragile, both ecologically and culturally. When hill-farmers earn more as porters than from farming, food production falls; in Arctic and desert societies, wage labour and government handouts reduce traditional food-gathering. The passage also shows positive responses: local communities can benefit by reviving crafts — Swiss villagers revived cheese production, Arctic communities run tourism businesses, and Native American groups produce and sell pottery and jewellery — balancing their needs with tourism's demands.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Wilderness tourism needs little investment but harms fragile areas.
  • Food-gathering declines as people join tourism.
  • Not only tourism — wages and handouts also disrupt.
  • Positive responses: reviving local crafts.

Passage 2: Toughened Glass

What it's about: Architects favour toughened glass because it is much stronger than ordinary glass and, when it breaks, its fragments are not sharp. Its strength comes from the making process: the glass is heated then cooled very quickly, so the outer layer contracts before the inner layer, creating helpful tension between the two layers. However, if the glass contains tiny nickel sulphide impurities, unstable crystals can form and expand suddenly — especially in warm weather — and the pane may shatter without warning. Experts disagree about how often this happens, and the crystals cannot be detected without sophisticated equipment.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Stronger & safer than ordinary glass.
  • Strength comes from fast cooling and tension.
  • Nickel sulphide impurities cause sudden shattering.
  • Hard to detect; experts disagree on frequency.

Passage 3: The Effects of Light on Plant and Animal Species

What it's about: Light matters to living things for two reasons: as a cue for timing daily and seasonal rhythms, and to help plants grow. Because day length changes predictably (unlike temperatures), many species use it to trigger breeding — this seasonal effect is called photoperiodism. A short-day plant flowers when days are short; a long-day plant flowers when a critical day length is exceeded; and day-neutral plants flower after a set period regardless of daylength (useful where the best time to reproduce is uncertain — e.g. desert annuals that flower whenever rainfall occurs). Long-day plants often need insects for fertilisation; the passage also mentions crops such as sugarcane and the classification of plants by shade tolerance.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Day length is a reliable seasonal cue.
  • Photoperiodism triggers flowering/breeding.
  • Short-, long- and day-neutral plants differ.
  • Adaptive value: matches reproduction to conditions.
