Passage 1: Australia's Sporting Success

What it's about: Why do Australians win so many medals for such a small population? The passage explains that success is manufactured, not accidental. After a poor Olympic result, the government set up the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and poured money into elite training. Behind each athlete is a team of scientists using technology — analysing biomechanics with sensors and cameras, monitoring blood and fitness, and modelling races on computers. A key idea is the "competition model", where athletes race against a simulated rival, and clever gadgets (like sensors on a rowing boat) give instant feedback. The writer notes performance can improve by around 20 percent, but warns that other countries are now copying the system.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Success is engineered through government funding + the AIS. সরকারি অর্থ ও AIS।
  • Sports science: biomechanics, sensors, computer modelling.
  • Competition model: training against a virtual rival.
  • Warning: the edge shrinks as rivals copy the method.

Passage 2: Delivering the Goods

What it's about: World trade has grown far faster than world output, and this passage explains why. Cheaper, more reliable freight transport is the key. The big turning point was containerisation — packing goods into standard steel boxes that move seamlessly from ship to train to truck, cutting loading time and theft. Bigger ships and better port equipment brought costs down further. Air freight, though expensive, carries high-value, time-sensitive goods. The result is a global system where components are made in many countries and assembled elsewhere, and where falling transport costs let poorer nations join world markets.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Trade grew faster than output thanks to cheaper freight.
  • Containerisation made transfer fast, safe and cheap.
  • Air freight serves high-value, urgent goods.
  • Global supply chains spread production worldwide.

Passage 3: Climate Change and the Inuit

What it's about: The Inuit of the Arctic are among the first to feel climate change: thinning ice, unfamiliar weather and shifting animals threaten a way of life. The passage also traces their history — the Thule ancestors who spread across the Arctic, hunting sea mammals and fish and later being pushed into a more nomadic life. Traditional Inuit knowledge, once dismissed, is now valued by scientists studying the warming north. Modern life has brought imported food and settled towns, but researchers and elders are working together, combining local observation with science to understand and adapt to the changes.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • First to feel warming: ice, weather and animals change.
  • Thule ancestors hunted sea mammals across the Arctic. Thule
  • Traditional knowledge now valued by science.
  • Adaptation: elders + scientists work together.
