Passage 1: Advantages of Public Transport

What it's about: A World Bank study by an Australian institute argues that cities relying heavily on public transport are more efficient than car-dependent ones. Compact, transit-rich cities waste less time and money on travel, even though people assume more roads and cars mean progress. The passage shows that higher incomes do not have to mean more cars, that clever planning can avoid an overcrowded centre, and that citizens ("people power") have blocked damaging road schemes. It also notes that purely economic arguments often fail to persuade, and that telecommunications may change where people live and work.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Transit-rich cities are more efficient than car-based ones.
  • Higher income ≠ more cars — planning matters.
  • People power can stop harmful road projects.
  • Telecommunications may reshape where people live.

Passage 2: Greying Population Stays in the Pink

What it's about: Elderly people are staying healthier for longer. Drawing on the US National Long-term Care Survey analysed by Kenneth Manton, the passage reports that rates of disability among older Americans have steadily fallen, so the "greying" of the population may be less costly than feared. Reasons include better medicine, healthier lifestyles, less smoking and improved living conditions. The findings have big implications for pensions and healthcare, suggesting that a longer life need not mean more years of illness — many people now "stay in the pink" (stay healthy) well into old age.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Disability among the elderly is falling over time.
  • Manton's survey tracked the long-term trend.
  • Causes: medicine, lifestyle, less smoking.
  • Ageing may cost less than once feared.

Passage 3: Numeration

What it's about: How did humans learn to count? The passage traces the history of numeration. Some early peoples (in Tasmania and parts of South Africa) had words only for "one", "two" and "many". As societies grew, they invented ways to record larger numbers — using body parts, tally marks and eventually written symbols. Different cultures chose different bases (our base-10 comes from counting on ten fingers), and some words reveal the counting behind them — the Gothic word "tachund" hints at "ten". The passage shows numbers as a human invention that grew step by step with civilisation.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Some early peoples counted only one, two, many.
  • Body parts & tallies recorded larger numbers.
  • Base-10 comes from counting on fingers.
  • Words still hide their old counting roots.
