Passage 1: Doctoring Sales

What it's about: The passage looks at the aggressive sales and marketing of the pharmaceutical industry — one of the most profitable in North America. Drug sales reps like "Kim Schaefer" offer doctors free samples, gifts, meals, trips and payments to promote new medicines. This raises an ethical question: is it useful education or a form of bribery? Reps do bring doctors valuable information, but heavy spending on gifts and hospitality may bias prescribing. The writer presents the "chicken-or-egg" debate — are doctors to blame for expecting perks, or is it the industry's job to set limits?

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Reps offer gifts, samples, meals to influence doctors.
  • Ethical grey area: education or bribery?
  • Reps do provide useful drug information.
  • Who is responsible — doctors or the industry?

Passage 2: Literate Women Make Better Mothers?

What it's about: Children in developing countries are healthier when their mothers can read — but until recently no one could prove that reading itself was the cause, not just family wealth. A long-term study in Nicaragua, after the 1980s National Literacy Crusade, followed about 3,000 women. It found that women who learned to read as adults had much lower infant mortality than those who stayed illiterate. Researchers (Sandiford, Cleland) are still exploring why — perhaps literate mothers use clinics better or have smaller families. The finding suggests educating women is a powerful, direct health intervention, with clear implications for aid budgets.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Literate mothers = healthier children.
  • Nicaragua study isolated reading as the cause.
  • Lower infant mortality for newly literate women.
  • Educating women is a direct health measure.

Passage 3: Persistent Bullying

What it's about: Persistent bullying is one of the worst experiences a child can face. Reporting on the Sheffield Anti-Bullying Project led by Professor Peter Smith, the passage explains that bullying takes many forms — verbal, physical and indirect (being excluded). It harms victims and can make bullies more likely to become violent adults. Schools once denied the problem, but three changes helped: greater awareness, new resources/materials, and evidence that intervention works. Approaches include a whole-school policy, clear guidelines, teaching about it in the curriculum, and understanding the difference between real aggression and playful fighting.

Key Ideas (মূল ধারণা)

  • Bullying is verbal, physical and indirect.
  • It harms victims and shapes violent adults.
  • Three changes improved schools' response.
  • Whole-school policy and guidelines help.
